Eurovision: You Decide

By | January 27, 2017

This has crept up on us somewhat but tonight at 7:30 on BBC2 Graham Norton and Mel Giedroyc and whoever is watching at home will decide which of six acts will have the honour of finishing 25th at the Eurovision Song Contest in May.

Talk suggests the songs are pretty good as well.

Edit: In fact it’s just Mel this evening although you wouldn’t guess that from the home page…

After a few listens, I have found all the songs to be very similar and not all that enjoyable. I think it really hurts the process when you pick 6 solo artists, mostly all of whom are singing ballads. If you’re going to put it to a public vote, all the acts should be differ in genre, bands & solo artists, etc.

After listening to the songs, I seriously considered tweeting something along the lines of “The BBC has a definite vision for Eurovision recently: boring” – that said, they’re really just being the BBC which is safe and conservative, nothing too out there and stick to a model of a solo artist singing a ballad written by like 7 people somehow.

I like the idea of the public vote, I just think the public control is coming in a good couple of rounds too late.

Leagues better than last years entries, and actually decent songs (strings!) but none of them seemed like they’d stand a chance in competition.

Would make more sense if FFF determined the order of play, with the winner choosing the position they play in and runner ups then choosing their seat, with 6th place eliminated at that stage.
