Show Discussion: Pop Quiz – The Comeback

By | December 28, 2016

Erm, we couldn’t find a clean press release picture for this revival so here’s an 80s classic.

Wednesday 28th and January 4th,
BBC4, 9:30pm

Well this is quite a nice idea. To sort of tie-in with the popularity of 1980s Top Of The Pops repeats BBC4 regularly show, a two-off revival of the defining music quiz of the decade, Pop Quiz, once again hosted by DJ, I’m a Celebrity alumni and political songwriter Mike Read and featuring guests who may well have turned up on the original, from the programme blurb, “Guests include Toyah Willcox, Tom Bailey (Thompson Twins), Andy McCluskey (OMD), Steve Norman (Spandau Ballet), Mari Wilson and Leee John (Imagination).”

The promo we’ve seen suggest they’ve nicked the desks from A Question of Sport, and we’ve actually no idea whether the questions will all be based on 80s music or everything up to today. It’ll be interesting to see if this leads to anything though – whether it’s repeats of the original show to partner TOTP or further new episodes.

I have to say I have never seen the show before. Now I have watched it tonight it’s so brilliant. Mike makes a brilliant host, I for one say that Mike Read should have more air time on Tv.
The pop quiz guests, seem to enjoyed themselves. The questions were great even I got Three correct and I wasn’t even around in the 80’s. This show coukd easy work on BBC2 on Monday evenings alongside Only connect, university Challenge.
I will ve watching next week’s show. I do hope tonight’s show rate well and then the BBC can commission a full series.

      Well, alongside UC anyway.

Has any reason been given yet for OC’s move to Fridays?

A new episode of Das Spiel Beginnt aired last night on ZDF. I still really quite like this show, although the new games played last night didn’t reallly involve any impressive new set pieces being created for the show. Also their version of a Scalextric-style-game was a bit of a stretch – go carts being ridden around a track!

My issue with Das Spiel Beginnt is that whilst the games are visually impressive, they somehow contrive to be a bit of a chore to watch quite a lot of the time.

I quite enjoy the sheepish look on the celebrities’ faces when they win the end game though.

I thought this was perfectly reasonable and I don’t really have much to add.

It’s a pity the 4:3 titles didn’t meld with widescreen borders. Also the score shots were just a tiny bit set-off from each other which annoyed me, but no issues with the content which was straightforward fun.
