Well on this most blackish of Fridays I can’t think of anything more appropriate than a series one episode of Sale of the Century from 1972, with Nicholas Parsons hitting peak officiousness and a top prize of some golf clubs. Do check out this guy’s channel.
I actually didn’t realise Sale of the Century had player elimination, if you ever fell below zero you were out. And this isn’t limited to this episode either, the same guy’s got an episode from 10 years later and the rule is still in place.
I also enjoyed in great detail Parsons explaining the rollover champion rule at the end, which we’d all just take for granted these days.
Unrelated, but some episodes of Simon Munnery’s baffling Either/Or surfaced on the Tube some time ago.

Surely a strong contender for the most aggressively bizarre game show ever created.
Nice. I used to quite enjoy a bit of Either/Or back in my formative years i.e. when I was about 19.
I absolutely LOVED Either / Or – I spent many a late night watching the UK Play repeats with a glass of wine…and I found that the more wine you drink, the more you understand the show…which is both fantastic…and worrying!!
Gigantic news from Germany, though very unofficial:
Ex-TV meteorologist Jörg Kachelmann has shared a request on twitter for a show he really didn’t want to do (he was kicked from presenting on TV with a really dirty yellow press campaign, so one could understand the reasons), because this format is the one and only
De Mol.
It appears Constantin Media is working on a remake for Sat.1 that is meant to air in May or September 2017. 8 episodes à 120 minutes and one best of recap. This would work perfectly for their new game show slot on Sunday nights that will happen as soon as The Voice of Holland of Germany ends it season in that slot. Apparently they shoot in South Africa with celebrities (though Sat.1 never has great celebs) and they plan on having 3 to 4 tasks per episode, 1-2 physical and to 2 psychological ones.
If you would like to read about it, here’s the DWDL article: http://m.dwdl.de/a/58912
Apparently the companies involved tried to persuade Jörg Kachelmann to delete his tweets concerning this matter, but he doesn’t give a shit.
Only problem yet: Sat.1 denies any plans for this and says that Constantin seems to try to sell it with a cast they try to complete before pitching it. Not sure that’s true, but I also feel like this would work lovely on RTL’s clever little brother Vox but not on Sat.1.
Okay, they think of filming it somewhere between mid February and early April, so they should know the channel already, I suppose. There will be a maximum jackpot of 100,000€ available.
And they use pictures from the last season from Belgium so hopefully they try to get that asthetic (which would make sense considering Constantin Entertainment also has a very succesful Movie production company).
HURRAH!
I still do reckon it would fit well on Tuesday or Sunday evenings in the UK. If there are ever any Mole UK rumours, let me know as I would love to get in on the production of that show…!
Major game show spoiler on the front page of Digital Spy at the moment!
Well I couldn’t find it so I expect it’s gone or I’m not looking hard enough.
It’s to do with the lottery.
That it’s not being broadcast on BBC One any more?
Hardly a spoiler, we’ve already covered it.
Not to do with the lottery, just checked and it is still on there but quite far down the mess of a front page they have – if you’re struggling try looking at the sidebar of articles on the right (Actually that might explain it if you’re using a mobile, I’m using a desktop PC at the moment)
Ah I’ve seen it now. Wowsers.
Actually that’s really interesting, we get to find out what the contingency is.
Ah, Deal or no Deal.
Quick thing. You may know that Frank Buschmann is leaving Schlag den Star & Prosieben at the end of the year.
It appears he is now the commentator of ‘Die 2: Gottschalk und Jauch gegen Alle’ on RTL.
Something to look up over the weekend, thanks James.
That DS spoiler- you think, unless they can’t because of how they shot these, they do this one last?
Each game is self contained so no real reason they can’t play with the order. It’d look like a total fix though.
On the other hand I expect the last episode was always designed to be the last episode.
Not the most reliable source of information granted, but The Mirror reckon five Deal On Tour shows a year going forward, including one from a viewer home although the journalist may just have been watching a bit too much House Party when knocking together the article

Fun stuff. And I think journo might have wires crossed re: Cheap Cheap Cheap, don’t think that’s the show Alan Carr involved with. Also they’re filming 30eps of that in Bristol, so Noel probably not moving soon.

As well as Sell or Swap, Noel Edmonds will be hosting Cheap Cheap Cheap, which is looking for contestants.
He says “it’s not quite a game show and not quite a sitcom. It’s very different. In fact, (it’s) totally original”.
I reckon it’s going to be Noel doing a show a little Avanti Un Altro-esque, with lots of regular characters, which could be really interesting.
Cultura Moderna returns next Monday on Italia1
Hurrah!
US Divided had a sneak preview episode tonight in advance of its January premiere….it’s, well, not good.
Format rundown-
Four contestants start the game
In round one, three questions with a starting value of $5,000 are asked. Three options, one is correct. They have 60 seconds to come up with an answer, with the money counting down. Correct answers add money to the bank, incorrect answers lose half of any accumulated money (there are no strikeouts, they play the entire show- well, three of them do)
After the first question, a new option becomes available- a Takeover. If a contestant believes their answer is correct, they can press a button and automatically lock it in for everyone. This can be done twice.
In round 2, still three options, but two of the three are right. Starting value is now $10,000, still 60 seconds to answer.
After this, the four contestants then have to vote on who they want to eliminate from the game. Most votes against is out.
The next players have to put the three answers in a correct order
(Sorry, post got partially eaten)
Next question is putting the three options in order, $15,000 starting value.
The last question either one, two, or all three answers are right, $25,000 starting value.
Then you get to the split. Don’t know if this will change, but in the previews the split was 60/30/10. 100 seconds to agree, but no debate time- the money starts counting down immediately.
The questions weren’t interesting- in fact a few of them were based on opinion surveys, which is a big no-no in a show like this.
The hook of the show will be the split, to see if people will agree to take a lesser share or not- and the show has a studio audience, so you know people will boo.
It’s intriguing that the show was originally designed on decisions being unanimous now has elements that take that away. I don’t really have an issue with the round formatting, although boring questions is a massive no no and eliminating a player just seems very silly.
The intent is pretty obvious – they want less division leading to total loss, so they are giving the sheep a chance to weed out the psychopath. Players will now have to be mule-headed in a most polite, more verbose manner; there are also more of them, so takeovers are an attempt to control chat time. It does go against the USP, such as it is, but what do I know?
I quite liked (UK) Divided personally but there you go. Probably because it is a rare example of a 60 minute ITV show that actually had multiple teams / rollovers rather than dragging out a 30 minute show to an hour
Here’s the preview ep…

I actually don’t think this is completely awful. The questions, other than the poll related ones, were fine (albeit not quite as clever as we had), I like Mike Richards. The quiz format still basically works. It’s certainly not a slow twenty minutes, it fills its time fairly well.
Unlikable contestants is an issue because I found myself not really caring if they split it in the end. As it turned out it was pragmatically damp squibish. Whether the bank is likely to be big enough to cause massive arguments is all to going to depend on that last question evidently.
The fourth player is a quality neutral addition. I didn’t hate it, I didn’t think it was basically necessary.
Some more news from Germany, this time ARD access prime-time:
French format “Guess my Age” will be called “Rate mal, wie alt ich bin” (Guess how old I am) and it will air on fridays after new episodes of German Chase the week after next week iirc.
And “Sag die Wahrheit”((To) Tell the truth) will be put in that slot as soon as the Guess my Age season has finished. Normally it airs on SWR (the southwest one of the regional ARD channels) on mondays at 22:00 and I love the show. Will be interesting to add a panel show to the quiz line-up now.
