The Board of Excitement 21st -27th March 2010

By | March 20, 2010

Only one week to go until the clocks go forward and the nights get lighter, MY POWERS ARE FADING THE HORROR… THE HORROR…

  • The Bother Series of Poker Double Stake Double Stack Special (Sunday, Full Tilt, 8pm GMT/1600ET) David’s promising exciting insider gossip this evening, if that’s not worth $22 of your money and about two hours of your time, with the possibility of winning a shedload then frankly I don’t know what actually is. Game 4 discussion page is here.
  • The Amazing Race (Sunday, CBS): This was so good this week I can’t actually remember anything about it (because I don’t normally get to watch it until midweek, whereas I got to watch it early last time). This is the sort of top analysis that only the industry’s most favouritist website can provide. Oh, and Minute to Win It‘s on NBC as well, if you’re a fan of rather stodgy programming.
  • Only Connect (8:30pm, Monday, BBC4): Gamblers vs Bowlers. It was pretty tough going last week. The questions might be the closest quiz has to art, but like difficult art, without people who can ‘get it’ it can leave you feeling a bit cold. What I am basically saying is, I’m not expecting the Strategists to win the series. Also I can’t draw.
  • Survivor (Wednesday, CBS): You read that right, it’s a day early this week because of some basketball.

Is that it?

I might do a mystery feature at some point over the week then.

Wow the Solitary final was fantastic, what a fitting winner IMO for the final (maybe ever) episode.

Ill not say anymore than that incase some of you are yet to watch the final outcome.

I’m inclined to agree, except for one thing, that being I’m not sure the penalties scaled traditionally, and I’m wondering if who the contestants were might have been a factor.

It was a great task, though.

Those who will remember last month I published details on the new Millionaire format to be shown sometime in the spring. At the time, I didn’t have any clarification on how the clock works. Now I do and it’s interesting.

    Questions 1-2 (£500-£1K) = 15 Seconds
    Questions 3-7 – (£2K-£50K) = 30 Seconds
Questions 8-12 (£75K-£1 Million) = No time limit.

That means if anybody does reach £50K, they get the fourth lifeline and can take their time from the £75K question onwards.

Whether or not you’re a fan of the clock, I don’t think it’s going to make any difference at all to how the show rates this year. People have either tired of Millionaire or they haven’t – and a time limit isn’t going to bring back the viewers who’ve given up on it, and is going to risk pissing off some people who’ve stuck with it.

It really needs resting for a couple of years and then it can have a big comeback. Wasn’t a fan at first but I’d certainly consider introducing the Millionaire Hotseat format and then recording a bunch of 30 minute shows which can be played out whenever slots are available during the week (notably Wed 7.30pm when there is no football).

I reckon that’s the best possible way to implement a clock. Speeds up the earlier questions to cut out the dead air if they haven’t someone not very good on, leaves plenty of time to up the tension later on. I think I’ll enjoy this. If they don’t put the clock in bloody Verdana.

      What’s the fourth lifeline?

Why do ITV always mess around with their hit shows!! This show used to be good until they changed the format in 2007/2008!!

Fourth lifeline is Switch the Question but yes, they are making the changes as nobody is watching it.

I have a feeling they might run this on Sunday nights.

Can we safely say, then, that Millionaire’s time is running out?

And one would think that when ITV does finally pull the plug on it, it will generate a great deal of publicity…

Just watched the latest ‘Minute to Win It”. Not much different from the previous episodes.
My housemate, Luis Rodriguez, who is not a game show fan, made an interesting observation upon seeing MTWI.
Upon seeing the audience in the studio, Luis made the observation that the audience had to be a “bought” one. All are young, well-dressed, “beautiful people”. This he does not see as a cross-section of Los Angeles.
For the sake of comparison and contrast, I showed him the opening of the 19/9/09 episode of “The Cube”. What he saw of the audience struck him as being real people: a real cross-section of London.
Is this the basis for another scandal? I doubt it. But it is an interesting observation. i don’t know if anybody will care if the studio audience for MTWI is a Potemkin village or not.

So many TV shows are made in LA that going to be part of the audience at a studio recording isn’t seen as anything that special, save for Wheel, Price, Jep and popular sitcoms. Many of their gameshows pay unemployed actors to sit in the chairs.

If the audience is not entirely cast, they also give away televisions and holidays during recording breaks to keep the excitement going.

Pretty interesting episode of TAR last night I thought…a lot of misdirection, the tasks were good, and it proves that The Guide should add a roll of duct tape as well as a towel to vital items…
