The Old Code

By | April 22, 2016

So this week has been all about The Code on BBC1.

But longer term readers may remember Endemol were getting very excited about their own show called The Code way back in the mists of time (April 2012 in fact) which was even piloted with Andrew Castle, mixing questions, Deal or No Deal style luck and light Mastermind-esque code breaking.

It didn’t go anywhere obviously. But there was an online game you can play (you can’t any more by the looks of things). Here with a video made in 2012 is Bother’s Bar commenter Keshihead “doing” a playthrough:

As a format I think Jeopardy is worthy of being tested on a British audience again maybe ITV should pilot it in the 5pm Chase slot one summer

I,ve long thought about who would bee the ideal host that would make Jeopardy finally work in the UK

I’ve always wanted to see an up-to-date version of Jeopardy (and maybe Wheel too, while we’re at it!) over here too. I’ve got no idea who would host it though, and make it work as well as Alex Trebek has all these years.

I’d love to see, as a summer replacement for The Chase, Jeopardy AND Wheel of Fortune; both are (or at least were) half-hour shows unless ITV want to bloat them out. Bradley could reprise his role on Wheel, which (to my mind) would be damage limitation.

I wonder why old formats seem to come back in several countries at the same time. All-Star Family Fortune and Jeopardy are good examples. Do the format owners lower their fee every once in a while to revive their cult brand and keep it possible to remake it every five to ten years? Or is it simply the success of one country where said format has survived longer than in others so that the others want to try it again?

well, the Italian edition is not the original Jeopardy! but a very similar format invented by Mike Bongiorno himself. there are three rounds:

the first is the preliminary questions round: each player is asked 10 questions about a subject of their choice for €3000 a pop.

the second is the big board round: there are six categories and tsix spaces per category (not 5 like on J!). values are €1000/€2000/€3000/€4000/€5000/€10000.
hidden within EACH category there’s a Risk space (daily double) and a Joker space (free money!).
the minimum wager for a Risk is €3000. if a Risk question is missed, the turn goes to the player in third place.

there are a couple special spaces in this season
-the “WEB” space: the contestant is allowed to look up the answer on the internet. if the contestant still misses, s/he loses double the value of the question. if the contestant declines to use the internet and answers correctly, s/he wins double the value of the question

-the “MIKE” space: the question comes directly from footage of the 70s original show.

also one of the categories is the “Living Category”: all the questions are about and read by that night’s celebrity guest.

finally, when the board is exausted, it’s time for the final round. the isolation booths are closed and then each contestant must answer to a series of questions (usually five) about the subject of their choice within 60 seconds.
it’s a double-or-nothing game. fail and lose everything, win and double your money! the player who ends with the most money wins and is the champion!

because it a primetime weekly show, the budget is quite high. a good player could very well win over €100000 on a single night

no ungeoblocked video yet, but this page has a lot of pictures

the best part is that the original show was in white and black (it ended in 1974 and colour in Italy came in 1977) so seeing it in colour was a complete shock for many.
