The Chase Australia begins today

By | September 14, 2015

I’m sure it will turn up somewhere, best of luck to all involved.

Edit: The premiere ep has been rather unfortunately timed with a developing story about an attempt to overthrow current Australian PM Tony Abbott, as such it may well not have got the attention it would like and may not have aired at all.

Edit Edit: It’s on Youtube here.

Are some minor tweaks to the graphics, especially on the game board. And the host is awful – they really should have left him in the 80s!

Are there any good Australian hosts that aren’t in the Shaun Micallef/Adam Hills mould?

For those who saw the first two episodes, Andrew is much more relaxed than he was when he hosted Deal or No Deal. The reason being is because this show is a serious quiz show as opposed to the party atmosphere of Deal or No Deal. Sure he may not be COMPLETELY settled into the new format yet but he’s definitely trying. He was also more relaxed when he hosted The Rich List. It’s very similar to Bradley Walsh because when he hosted the British version of Wheel of Fortune, he was acting wild and crazy, but ever since he started hosting The Chase, he’s learned to be much more relaxed. I think Andrew will follow in Bradley’s footsteps very well.

So, Neil Patrick Harris’ Tuesday Night Takeaway. A very faithful, by-the-book re-creation of the original … but, perhaps surprisingly, it felt a lot less “spectacular” than the original.

The segments: Talk with the audience and bring a couple on stage to show how NPH was present during their recent wedding; Singalong Live (with “More More More” as the introduction music instead of “Stayin’ Alive”) with musical guest Gloria Gaynor, and a $1,000 prize for the correct missing word; “Neil vs.” a different person in competition every week (this week, announcer Reese Witherspoon in the skyscraper climb); Undercover with the cast of The Voice; Get Lucky (which is Win the Ads with only 16 squares and many very big-ticket items, and where we don’t get a peek at which prizes the player has won before they decide whether to go for the lot); and the End of the Show Show.

Ant & Dec appeared on stage during the End of the Show Show but weren’t announced and didn’t speak; they have “executive producer” credits at the end. “Little NPH” had a couple of brief appearances but not an entire segment.

The studio seemed a lot smaller, the lighting was more subdued, the opening titles weren’t nearly as exciting, and everything seemed just a bit more low-key (except for the prize value). I was expecting the opposite from the U.S. version, where everything would have been turned up to 11. Curious to see how the ratings come out in its initial 10 p.m. time slot, moving to 8 p.m. later.

Enjoyable enough, but I thought it should have been bigger.
