Inevitable disappointment

By | August 24, 2015

So this came up in Broadcast today – head of SyFy in the US Dave Howe is keen to remake The Krypton Factor for SyFy. This would normally fill people with terror but SyFy have done some quite good shows in the past so we will see. Here are the relevant quotes:

The Krypton Factor set for US reboot.

US cable network Syfy is developing an American version of The Krypton Factor.

Last week, Syfy president Dave Howe, a Brit who previously spent 15 years working at the BBC in London, revealed The Krypton Factor was the one show that he would like to revive.

So: not necessarily happening yet then. Anyway here’s the first episode of the US one, and you can read more about the show here:

I know things have been a little stale on Survivor the past few seasons, but this change sounds interesting; the hidden immunity idols won’t be hidden at camp.

Instead at camp people will find a diagram of a RC or IC that is to be played, and will be shown exactly where the HII is. The downside is they might have to screw up their tribes chances at winning the RC or IC in order to get the HII for themselves. And they won’t all look alike; one time it could be really intricate and look like a HII, another time it could look like it was a fake idol someone made at camp- but it’s actually a real one.

I haven’t either, but the fact the cast was picked by the audience (and for the most part were good choices- the main one I was hoping for and got was Kelly Wigglesworth, who was the runner-up in Season 1 15 years ago)and the new stuff might make me watch it at least in passing….

In other news Crystal Maze Experience delayed until 2016, citing making it a better experience at a bigger location that can run for longer. We’ll see.

I was quite excited to get this notification today, especially as my belief behind the backers remains strong (I am one of those funders from the crowd!) and I am willing them to do as good a job as they can.

The fact that their ambitions, and funding, have now outgrown their prospective planned site can only bode well (I am also starting to sound like an eternal optimist!)

Additionally on the plus side, if it took £250,000 to build a “maze” in 1990, then hopefully with around double to spend on the new version (Minus costs) and the increase in technology available nowadays, I can see this is going to be good…..

      ….I hope!

Generally that is a bit of a dumb move.. If they knew the event was going to be big, then surely they could have relocated earlier once it got to twice the budget.. Generally, I would like it, if they find an warehouse or old air hangar and go big enough to take in the project..

I mean it’s over 927K that was earned.. They surely could keep the place running for a year and get the money from the jackets and t-shirts and crystals too.. those guys could be in the million pound mark if possible..

A few years back, I wrote about not being familiar with the second attempt at an American version of “The Krypton Factor”. Turns out that it did run in Los Angeles, at six-thirty on Saturday mornings. There was no promotion for it whatsoever. Otherwise, I’d have been watching.

One can only speculate as to which incarnation of “The Krypton Factor” the SyFy head has in mind–the “classic” version, the 1995 version, or the 2009-10 revival.

I wonder if he might be better advised to bring “The Cube” to American shores. I figure that some of us might find “The Krypton Factor” more than a bit daunting. Some folks figure that you need to have three lobes to your brain in order to win the games.
