Stefan Raab: End of an era

By | June 17, 2015

So when we heard Stephen Gatjen was quitting Schlag den Raab at the end of the year, we all wondered who his replacement would be.

Turns out it’s moot, Stefan’s just announced he’s quitting television at the end of the year. He was offered a new contract at ProSieben and has turned it down.

As well as his famous chat show TV Total and gameshow Schlag den Raab, he’s responsible for many annual events – Wok Racing, Autoball, The Bundesvision Song Contest amongst other things, he’s competed in and hosted Eurovision and in recent years found a winner in Lena and Satellite.

There are still four more episodes of Schlag den Raab to come before the end of the year, and Prosieben have left the door open if he wants to return.

Jesus, you don’t have to do that just because a woman’s beaten you…

I had a bloody great feature idea for January’s episode as well. OH WELL NEVER MIND, YOU JUST QUIT TELEVISION STEFAN.

The impression I get is that it’s ending, ratings for it have been down and this gives it a chance to bow out gracefully.

I think he’s burned out- he’s been doing stuff for the better part of 2 decades on TV, plus I also agree SdR probably was near the end anyway; he’s 48 and might be losing a step physically.

Here’s a thought for the last SdR ep- make it for charity, and it’s Raab against a team made up of all the people who have beaten him (16 have won so far).

Wow. Has anyone clearly stated that they’re not interested in filling Raabs position, and then should we have televised auditions to replace Raab. #notTopGear

I think it is wise for Stefan to set a timescale – it should make the final four episodes rate higher (“last chance to watch…”), and I would LOVE to see a final episode where the five potential candidates are all people who have previously beaten Raab.

Plus, he is getting older and these things only have a certain shelf life, I think this is a wise move, even if it is disappointing. I can’t imagine Raab quitting television forever, I reckon he’ll miss it and come back in some other show.

But, in the mean time, may I comment that I am free and at a reasonable rate, and that Schlag Den Brig also offers fantastic future entertainment value.

A shame Raab is leaving. Ratings for things like Stock Car, Wok WM and Bundesvision were way down. However, in the first half of this year, TV Total had it’s best ratings in 8 years. And Schlag den Raab is the second most popular show on Prosieben after The Voice of Germany. Prosieben certainly didn’t want him to go, that’s for sure.

I suppose age was a factor (49 this year) and doing four shows a week for nearly 15 years can be quite exhausting with everything else he does.

Also, Tipping Point has been recommissioned for an incredible 325 episodes, to be shown during 2016 and 2017. More info here – http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/news/a653501/ben-shephards-tipping-point-gets-a-whopping-325-new-episodes-from-itv.html#~pfUBEGXziqumNR

I had just great times helping you guys out with translations during the live commentation of Schlag den Raab, so I’m a bit sad about this.

I doubt Raab can be replaced for SdR. And it’s not only SdR. He had so many other shows (TV Total, Wok racing, diving, demolition derby, etc.), so that will tear a large hole into the schedule of ProSieben.

They do have potential replacements: For example, the duo “Joko and Klaas” (Joachim “Joko” Winterscheidt and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf) have done several large competition shows on ProSieben over the last years, including one where they “battle” each other in strange tasks and games, but IMHO none of them came close to Raabs big live shows.

I don’t think Raab will be gone for good. I guess he’ll do a few things on other channels and work behind the scenes to create new shows.

I think you can probably say it’s a matter of when, not if, that Crystal Maze indiegogo hits their goal- down to about 90K to go with 30 days left- if it keeps at the current pace perhaps next week sometime?

      Weekend I think.

I quite like new perks, I’m tempted by the bomber jacket, I’m just not sure I’d wear it out in public.
