Bother’s Bar’s Summer of Boredom 2014

By | May 20, 2014

No it’s too late, this is a thing now and it’s YOUR FAULT. I asked myself “what’s the most boring game you can remember?” Of course the first answer that popped into my head was Take on the Twisters. However there was of course another show, one which looked as though it might be exciting, but managed to fit ten minutes of tedium in between fleeting moments of interest. I am of course talking about 101 Ways To Leave A Game Slow.

Steve Jones being A Thing seems a long time ago now, doesn’t it? Anyway this is what was said at the time (four years ago now, blimey). Try and work out who the production people are in the comments.

Famous and Fearless strikes me as being a whole lot of not much.

        (mild spoilers herein)

It’s a fun game, but you could cut out 45 minutes without losing anything because there gets to a stage where it’s just going around in circles pointing the finger in various directions without really getting anywhere.

And it’s sorely lacking what in Columbo they used to call the “pop” – the key mistake that gives away the criminal and proves that it must have been them. In this case, I feel that there was not a great deal of evidence that showed anything particularly conclusive.

As I feared last week, the ability of the cast to find all the clues hindered the viewer’s ability to solve the murder themselves.

Interesting that the same six actors play throughout the series.

I think that’s true, but I think the company is decent and fun enough that I’m happy to watch it. No guarantees you’ll get that with every potential cast though.

Ah, this was first UK quiz I ever actually watched. I remember quite liking it at the time, honestly, and I still think the basic quiz could have been good fun in a much smaller, lower-budget show.

The rest of it hasn’t really stood the test of time in my eyes. I guess growing up with American quizzes post-Millionaire made me a bit more tolerable of padding, at the time.

I think I pointed out at the time that the basic idea behind the quiz could work as a daytime show, I think.

I fear we’re at the ‘expect the worst, hope for the best’ stage, I live in hope that she’ll make a surprising and happy comeback.

What? Victoria made an error? She said that Joey Bishop “was actually an early host of The Tonight Show.” He was never officially a host; just a very frequent guest and frequent guest host.

On which note, I’m wondering if “2” would have been a valid answer to the “i, 0, 1, sqrt(2)” sequence; instead of being “square roots of -1, 0, 1, 2”, it could equally have been “the next one in the sequence is the previous one squared plus one”; I think that does still hold out – and avoids the slightly awkward plus-or-minus aspect of calculating the square root.

Now watching Quizduell on ARD, and the app is working. They even invited a jazz band to celebrate it!

    Boring Midweek Ratings Round-Up:

    Pointless 3.00m (27.6%)
    Eggheads 0.98m (7.2%)
    The Link 0.77m (17.5%)
Come Dine With Me 0.74m (6.5%)
    Four in a Bed 0.65m (7.0%)
    Deal or No Deal 0.45m (7. 5%)
    Draw It 0.45m (5.9%)
    Countdown 0.23m (4.9%)

    Paul O’Grady 1.21m (11.7%)

All include HD and +1 where appropriate.

Only mildly interesting observation is that Countdown rating is behind the other four “terrestrial” channels, a repeat of Jeremy Kyle on ITV2 and some IPL Cricket on ITV4.
