Takeaway on Tour

By | October 31, 2013

Ant and Dec with no Red or Black to fill their Summers are taking proper Saturday night entertainment Saturday Night Takeaway on an arena tour next year so everyone can join in with “did you watch that programme? No.” Blimey and indeed gosh.

Tickets go on sale from next Friday, the 8th November at 9am, at prices yet to be announced. They’re taking in Cardiff, Birmingham, Leeds, London, Manchester, Nottingham, Belfast, Glasgow, Sheffield, Newcastle, Liverpool AND London.

I can’t believe the Cambridge Corn Exchange misses out… AGAIN!

    Off you go, then.

I can imagine ‘Takeaway on Tour’ could be cancelled due to not enough interest. I’m just not sure how the format will translate to arenas and whether it’s something that would bring out the crowds.

The last time something like this was done was in 2005 with Who Wants to a Be a Millionaire? Live. Although it ran to the end of the scheduled run, it was deemed a failure. Simply because they didn’t get enough people to take part at the main Torquay shows. There were other seaside resorts but only for a few days. I think the Torquay shows lasted four weeks or something.

I’d love to see any video or pictures of that. I’ve seen the US Disney attraction before. But would be interested to see the staging. Was Eamon Holmes a host?

Anthony Davis (of Stake Out fame) was definitely a host – there was a YouTube video of it until recently.

The lack of the big name isn’t a problem with this tour – Ant and Dec will surely be a draw, considering their perpetual popularity over the last decade or so.

There were three hosts. Les Dennis and Paul Ross being the other two but Eamonn Holmes did the shows in Torquay. They did a brief tour in July 2005 covering Eastbourne, Bournemouth, Grimsby, Harrogate and St Helier (Jersey) before doing a longer stint in Torquay in July and August 2005.

The game was played for points with 1 million points rewarding you with a Jaguar X Type car. The biggest winners were invited back to a grand final where the game was played for real. Those who got in the hot seat first time round played for cash. Whilst those who were at the grand final played for points if it was their first time. Mark Labbett was one of them who played twice and walked away with £16,000. Kevin Ashman was also there that evening but as he got in the hot seat the first time he would be playing for points. He ended up winning the Jaguar. Given he confessed to the local paper afterwards he doesn’t drive.

No it’s a known unknown, filmed around March/April IIRC but I wasn’t able to make the recording. From what I gather it has not been picked up. It was for ITV, original intention was to have celebrity captains, as I remember.

Interesting that the DM article mentions XF and DOI as previous tours, but misses out arguably the most successful one – Big Reunion. I know the success of that was part of the reason for finding an existing show we could tour with. Our team at work will be failing miserably to blag tickets for Leeds but will probably pay and go anyway. Still wont be allowed to win anything though I bet!
