My baby shot me down

By | June 13, 2013

So towards the end of last year we caught wind of a show Fremantle were developing called Bang Bang. In it, couples are challenged to run videogame-style obstacle courses against the clock, one running the course, the other opening the way by hitting balloon targets with a paintball gun, inevitably hovering in front of their partner with hilarious consequences. Halfway through they swap places, with even more hilarious consequences. I’m not sure about the show’s long term potential, but the pitch film is funny (via The Most Bizarre TV Shows In The World blog – which is also where we first saw Dero, so worth a look).

WELL! I’ve heard on the grapevine that the BBC are going to do this as Kiss Bang Wallop. Saturday evenings in the old Total Wipeout slot would be my guess.

    I’ll go first then..
No. I can’t think of anything positive to say about this.

A one quick joke idea (a string of fat people in bodysuits getting paintballed in front of a green screen) or Knightmare’s quickly amused cousin, and has all the hallmarks of being Number 1 in the 2014 UKGameshows/Bothers Bar Hall Of Shame already.

Total Wipeout got away with it due to the ironic nature of Hammonds commentary (pre-scripted, but at least he delivered it with a one eyebrow raised)and the comedy slo-mos, but unless the BBC get Brian Blessed to do the voicer (as in the pitcher)and shovel on the irony with a cement mixer, I can see pretty much every national newspaper calling for the BBC to suffer the same fate as ERT in Greece once this seeps into the schedules.

It may have a longer air-life if they abandon the great unwashed playing the game, and just cut to celeb charity editions.

But, did BBC Entertainment commissioning learn nothing from Don’t Scare The Hare?

Oh it’s totally a one joke show, but I think it’s quite a funny joke, and by the sounds of it it’s been ‘developed’ suggesting they’ll be at least another joke to go with it. I’d be pretty surprised if it didn’t go down the ironic commentary route.

I can’t see it getting more than a series, but I think it’s a show people will talk about.

Ye gods, I didn’t think anyone would pick that up in this country. Given that Hole in the Wall lasted two series, and still gets some play on CBBC, this might be a bit of a sleeper if done cheaply enough.

If “Bang Bang” wasn’t green screen, but an actual obstacle course (more like Wipeout), I would love it! I think the basic idea is fun (of course it’s stupid, but it’s fun anyway!).

I think the “wallop” element of the title suggests it might be a bit more physical than the original.

Fundamentally sound, if uninspired, but spoiled so badly by poor editing as to be nigh unwatchable? And with a dull as dishwater end game?
