Weekend round-up

By | May 4, 2013

BOOM! First thing’s first, it’s the second deepstack game of the BSOP tomorrow, $11 to play. Even if you’ve no interest in the league there should be a reasonable amount of money flying round and you’ve got a chance to grab some of it. It’s at 8pm, do come and join us.

NEXT! We’re fascinated by the Going for Gold app. We’re currently having a think about how we’re doing our app reviews because half of the ones listed on our app review page don’t exist any more – we might end up moving the ones done to the specials board and incorporating new things onto the main page. Anyway, it’s made by the same people who bought you Mastermind, A Question of Sport and Strike It Lucky none of which were terribly good. Have Deluxe Games turned a corner with Going for Gold? I think this screenshot sums the app up:

And well done if you got that at home. If you like the idea of repeating questions after two games, questions not turning up sometimes, poor implementations of the rules, Henry Kelly sounding bored and basic things being wrong (Henry Kelly says you’ve got two minutes for Four In a Row. You get one.) then it’s all yours for 69p on the iOS app store. And there are in-app purchases for question packs available! It also has Game Center connections, but it doesn’t register that fact unless you go to the leaderboards first. Going for Gold, there.

In other news it sounds like Countdown will be moving back to 3:10 from May 20th (I’m not quite sure what uplift in viewers is expected, but I think it will be disappointing, especially as there is competition in the 3-4pm slot now) and that evidently The Chase will be getting a few weeks off as Paul O Grady’s doing his chatshow again.

With Countdown moving back to 3:10. Deal or No Deal will be dropping the weekend edition come the autumn. Meaning it will drop to a weekdaily show.

Don’t quite see the connection between the two (although I was aware of the lack of weekend shows from a recent stint in the audience)

Wow, that Going For Gold app looks abysmal. I won’t be putting down any money for it…

That GfG app looks a bit disappointing. It’s hardly the most challenging of apps to develop.

I want to write the Pointless app, it’d be pretty excellent and suited to the devices. Have a word with Richard for me please Brig. 😉

Ha ha ha, I think people rather overestimate the influence I have on Richard Osman.

He’s already ruled it out loads of times anyway, so I can’t see that changing. Perhaps you could “do” an app that uses a similar idea.

It’s all about the questions though really. The official licence would allow access to all of Pointless’ database which must be massive now. I didn’t realise he’d ruled out an app, has he given a reason?

I have a similar issue with the crossword app I’ve always wanted to write, easy enough to develop but I’d need some properly compiled crosswords to stick in there.
