If you mess this up Endemol I will take it personally

By | March 26, 2013

Do you get the feeling Endemol don’t quite understand the attraction of their own show?

It’s the English promo for Next One!

Christ. They’ve sidelined the entire bonuses and characters and entertainment when that’s the beating heart of the show. Not pleased.

It’s Bother’s Bar favourite Avanti un Altro!, of course. I’m quite tempted to make a better one.

Looking round the website, there’s a promo for The Bodyguard based on the Noel Edmonds pilot as well.

As for Avanti (having not seen much of the original), that’s a pretty disastrous pitch film. Not sure they’ve completely ditched the challenges, but they’re not the focus, clearly. And couldn’t they come up with a better name than “temporary champion” and “official champion”?

I’d go for King/Queen of the Hill every time. I would probably also give them a throne to sit on and possibly a crown.

Hilarious use of Glenn Hugill voiceover on The Bodyguard, there.

I think I can see why Little Noel-y passed.

It’s certainly the first one I can think of in sometime where I can’t play ‘guess whether the voiceover is American, Dutch or Israeli’.

Naming things King/Queen of the hill enforces a gender binary and will upset TransMediaWatch, which I think many major broadcasters are trying to stay on the good side of.

            Better off saying imo

“The player can stop and take control of the champion’s seat. If they are in the seat at the end of the game then they will play for their money in the final game. But the other contestants will try to beat their score and seize control for themselves!”

Interesting to see all those pitch videos that site has for their formats…

in Italy it was called “potential champion”, “champion of the day” or just “champion”

in season 1 the chair was called “first class seat” to keep up with the “airport” theme

Taster tape really does fail to sell it. Although I do see 1 or 2 broadcasters in Europe picking it up. Not sure about the UK, maybe something C4 should go for.

Slightly off topic; the first ‘celebs’ on 5 Minutes to a Fortune (straight after the Grand National) will be Ann Widdecombe, Anton du Beke, Jo Brand and Meera Syal. Huge celebs.

      Channel 4 laying on a game/quiz show feast starting on the 8th of April;

      2.45pm – Countdown
      3.30pm – The Common Denominator
4.00pm – Deal or No Deal

I think France is going for it, and Richard Osman has hinted there would be some UK version news at some point.

Slightly worried about 5MtaF – love the concept, largely suspect it was one or two playtests away from being truly brilliant. We’ll see how it comes across on screen.

France going for it is not a surprise. TF1 or M6 will more than likely get it.

I have to say from the reviews and posts on here about the format of 5MtaF, I still don’t understand the whole gameplay. I’m hoping it’s a little easier to grasp on screen, but we’ll wait and see.

France 2, surprisingly, as it’s got Vincent LaGaf written all over it.

5MtaF isn’t that hard to grasp really, complete the games in the time or the money starts draining out the hourglass. That’s basically it.

            Lagaf’ is employed by TF1.

Unless convincing Lagaf’ to cross over, France 2 risks chalking down another ratings failure as they have few high-quality entertainers other than Nagui (Air Productions), Olivier Minne (Fort Boyard) and Julien Courbet (fired for criticising his superiors).

          2. Ryan

Isn’t Courbet the one that does En Toutes Lettres, the French version of Pasapalabra? Mildly curious to know what he did.

          3. Brig Bother Post author

I think he’s still doing Are You an Expert isn’t he?

Minne isn’t actually employed by France 2 any more, he’s on a yearly contract with Adventure Line, I think.

            Nagui most likely, I think.

          4. Delano

Was doing ‘Are You An Expert’.

The game show is ditched, Mr. Courbet received the same treatment for fiercely criticising France Télévision.

Since 2003; game shows came and went on France 2, and the most successful contender, En Toutes Lettres, was killed off because it touched one of France 3’s sacred cows, Des Chiffres Et Lettres.

Jack Donaghue could be an expert when comparing him to FT’s bumbling network execs.

          5. Ryan

I like the idea of Nagui doing Avanti! mostly because he’s got that kind of vibe. ISTR him doing the French version of Toothbrush, correct?

I recall seeing an episode of En Toute Lettres when I was in Europe a few years ago… and then seeing Pasapalabra… shame France Television couldn’t do the bonus like they did in Spain.

I really should just move to Europe, that would solve a lot of things ha ha ha.

          6. Tom H

No he won’t – the pilot was recorded with Courbet, who did them another pilot of 8 Out of 10 Cats. Not exactly the same vibe, is it? Maybe France 2 won’t go for either of them.

          7. Setsunael

Des Chiffres … is not exactly anymore sacred for France Televisions – it has been pushed back to 4:10 PM timeslot after the switch with the more and more popular Slam (1.6M viewers, 13.5% share ! ) and then the addition of Harry to their afternoon gameshow block . Won’t be surprised to see it go soon …

En Toutes Lettres was really good in its first season – then had to be pushed one hour earlier to make some room for Laurent Ruquier’s comic talent show “On ne demande qu’a en rire” ( but under the “you are at the same timeslot as DCDEL on F3, you have to move” argument ) … and got axed with declining ratings and a worse format.

Somewhat related : 1.2M€ in Pasapalabra’s jackpot (not yet won) – quite huge.

          8. Brig Bother Post author

Harry’s OK, it’s basically that game off Brainteaser with large words broken into smaller ones and jumbled writ large.

I’m surprised Slam is as popular as it is.

          9. Delano

Slam (2009) and Tout Le Monde Veut Prendre Sa Place (2006) have much in common: simple format, started as summer replacements becoming sleeper hits and skillful quick-witted hosts.

Hats off for Cyril Féraud, who has yet to turn 30 and enjoys such a grandiose career as presenter and journalist.

          10. David B

Crikey, is Ma Place still going? I’d never have thought it would get to over 2000 shows.

What ever happened to Hold On To Your Seat? I know we piloted it, but did it ever get to air? I remember they were mentioning it on breakfast television once, bigging up the aspect of the king becoming some kind of celebrity, but my memory is confused because it seems odd for them to talk about pilot shows in that way when they didn’t yet have a commission.

    3. Mart with a Y not an I

      Humph.
So much for my hunch, that it would be celebs from the racing world taking part.
Oh well. Still looking forward to watching the show from this side of the screen. Just hope the celeb editions aren’t stupidly easy, when compared to the civilian editions.

Given everything Brig has said, everything Travis has said, I get the feeling that Next! should be as unpredictable and warm as TV Burp circa 2010. People who don’t care for the quiz will stick around for the entertainment, people who don’t care for the faffing about have a Stupendously Difficult endgame. Approximately none of this comes through.

In the right hands, the leading player could be “Top of the ‘testants”. Anyone could call ’em our “winner so far”.

Really is a poor promo video – the game itself manages to stand out but phrases like “temporary champion” and even the name they’ve chosen just don’t seem to work. Surely “Next One Forward”, “Next in Line” or just “Next” sound better than “Next One”.

I just hope it doesn’t end up on the BBC given their ability to take a worldwide smash format and strip everything out of it that makes it a hit. It could really work as an alternate or even replacement for Deal or No Deal IMO (500k on Sunday for a celeb special – it’s days must be numbered!), while if they go for primetime ITV is possibly the best bet – and it is something that actually could work with Ant and Dec, especially the character aspect. The quiz would have a strong presence but it would be the entertainment which held it together.

I’ve been having a mildly interesting conversation with R Osman about this on Twitter. I *suspect* it’d suit the channels either side of the channel I *suspect* it’s been sold to better than it currently does.

The other fun thing was going “it’s in safe hands” in the morning to “look, please don’t blame us if it’s rubbish” by the afternoon. Telly!
