Fifty Fifty 19

By | March 5, 2013

Lewis Murphy IS BACK! with a new computer, and that means a new episode of the Internet’s premier gameshow chat podcast. And now he has SOUND EFFECTS (effect) and a THEME TUNE. This week he chats with gameshow know-it-all Travis Penery and TV’s Andrew “Keshihead” Sullivan about things that have happened since the last episode went out.

As I explained on twitter. I am not an expert at this podcast thing compared to the likes of Brig and Mr. Bodycombe.

I should really write down some notes rather than doing it on the fly.

I’m the same, even though that’s the 4th episode I’ve been on. I tend to umm and ahh a lot and I sometimes trip over my words

Literally the only notes I keep per episode are…
      – Opening script, including this week’s opening line
      – Guest lineup
      – News headlines, sometimes with links sometimes without
      – Audience news (these are the most detailed notes since I give everything like location and dates for this)
      – Maybe one or two lines about the topic of the week. Usually not.
      – Closing spiel

I do the rest on the fly just to make it a more natural conversation, that can dip into tangents when it needs to. I do sometimes move the conversation along but generally I do this very rarely, only if there’s silence. I prefer to overrecord and edit down than miss some interesting nugget someone has to say.

Unrelatedly, is there really a one-day stage revival of 24 Hour Quiz? Apparently so, or at least “sort of” – this version is less about the moolah and more about the, er, “oola!”.

Rhodri Marsden, who writes for the Independent, is a musician for hire on several different projects, probably most notably recently playing keyboard for Scritti Politti. He plays in lots of other bands as well, with the most relevant one here being Dream Themes, a TV theme tunes cover band in what I believe to be the electro-glam-to-pub-rock style, made up of the members of the London version of Frank Sidebottom’s Oh Blimey Big Band. (RIP, Chris/Frank.)

You can find their versions of Mastermind and Countdown (“nailed it”) if you look, but yesterday, Rhodri covered Strike It Lucky. The style works (screen-?) strikingly well in this case, though I have a suspicion that the descending scale parts might have a note or two out by a gnat’s semitone.

If I weren’t to mention the Ceramic Dalmatians here, a one-off to do a similar thing in the US just for game show theme tunes, then somebody else would.

Close to topic: Anna & Katy was a sketch show on Channel 4 last night focusing on TV pastiches, a good proportion of which were relevant to the interests of these parts. Highlight of yesterday’s episode was a German Countdown tribute, with scene-stealing scenery-chewing cameo from Lee Mack. It’s neither big nor clever and inevitably hit-and-miss but thoughtfully made, fast-moving and funny enough that I laughed through the best sketches three times.

In unrelated news, I got my David M Green headshot and question card from 31 Questions this morning. And as usual, he put a very quirky message on it.

    Dear Andrew,
Thank you so much for your delicious money. I know I wasn’t supposed to eat it, but I couldn’t resist. Don’t worry though. I’ll get it back in a day or 2. Thanks for making me the success I presume I’ll be by the time this headshot reaches you in the UK.
    Kind regards,
    David M Green

The question card is of Round #4 – Showboating (Gag segment)
(Contestants shown photos of famous boats. Need to name the boat. 3 points for a correct answer. No penalty for incorrect guess)
    1. Australia 2 – won America’s cup in 1983 and famed ‘winged keel’
    2. Olympic (Titanic’s sister ship) – in service 1911-1935
    3. Endeavour – Famously captained by James Cook to the east coast of Australia in 1770
    4. Costa Concordia – Famously captained by Francesco Schettino to some jagged rocks off the Italian coast in January 2012
    5. Sunshine (from the 1988 children’s TV series “Tugs”)
