Nice, I’ll deffo put in a form if a contestant call takes place as I would REALLY like a go! It looks like money for old rope, really, doesn’t it?

One bone of contention, though. Is it just me or is some of the calls about whether a player is in play or not seem unusually harsh. A fella on today’s show got some counters over the edge, and about 5-10 seconds after, some counters dropped and pushed some more over the edge, but Ben said they didn’t count as he wasn’t in play anymore. I call BULLSHIT. I’ve noticed this on other episodes as well, when someone will get screwed out of some counters because they’re ‘not in play’

Tipping Point is (or at least was, it might be worth checking) adjudicated by Beyond Dispute, so it might be worth enquiring with the awesome @oliviavdw regarding this (although I don’t think this is a show she’s on set for herself).

I’m guessing that’s both the round and the edit – they tend to be harsher in round 1 from my viewing, and it wouldn’t surprise me if, in episodes where timings are relatively tight (lots of questions correctly answered in round 2 and lots incorrectly answered in round 1), they’ve cut a chunk out between the initial push and the fall afterwards.

Good to see this get recommissioned – apart from Countdown, this would definitely be my second choice to go on. We considered an Only Connect application, but we were pretty convinced we wouldn’t get past the first round… (Also, if DJB is reading, any chance of an answer to that number question in the sequence round on the application form? Driving us mad, it is…)

I’ve noticed Ben making comments like “You get one more shove”, or “This is your last push” – I wonder if there’s something in the contestant rules that says they get (say) 3 cycles of the machine to get out as much as they can before they are deemed to be no longer in play?

The decision that got to me was that someone on yesterday’s episode wasn’t allowed the ones that fell in between their counters dropping in Round 2. Everybody was just watching and waiting for them to go knowing that nobody could have them, when I would have been desperately asking for my next counter to be in there so that I could take advantage!

    Good news, there.

Seriously: it’s undemanding fun, with the emphasis on fun, and if I wasn’t watching Countdown every night, I’d be watching a whole lot more Tipping Point.

In other news, BBC Press Office reports that BBC The Voice UK’s live shows (all three of ’em!) begin on 8 June, filling the gap between Eurovision and the All-England Lawn Tennis Championships.

I think I’ve heard the suggestion there are going to be ten pre-recorded shows, which would put a start date early March.

The big story here is that that date for the first The Voice live show is going to clash with the grand final of Britain’s Got Talent. TVUK came off second best last time they clashed.

Like most people, I can’t help but think if they want The Voice to be a success, putting it on when the weather is getting warmer is a mistake.

But the Beeb are up against the shooting wall with The Voice no matter what they do.

Run it this side of summer, and the press will be down on them anyway, for persisting with this (incorrectly perceived) ‘x-factor clone’.

Run with it the other side of summer, and they have the press down on them for running it up against Simon Cowell’s revolving set of 18-30 year olds sobbing that it is their last chance to make something of their lives.

Plus with Strictly elbowing it’s way back on screen every night for just over 2 1/2 months in October, this really is the only time to air it.

I think it is quite smart to limit the live shows to a minimum, but pre-recorded shows all the way from March to June is stretching also quite long.

They should have ran it now, versus Splash! and Takeaway, that seemed a smarter choice for me actually. But can’t see The Voice UK getting the megahit it is in other countries.

For those wondering, it’s a sequence question:
    350, -100, 400, ?

    Very few people got it.

yes, the question was about a Western movie.

I have found an earlier appearance of the Cowboy.
In a comedy movie, Luca Laurenti (as himself) takes a bank robbery for a hidden-camera prank and springs into character. the robbers even mistake him for Paolo Bonolis.

Hopefully it burns itself out sooner rather than later. BTW, whatever happened to Divided – did it just end up getting the chop because it wasn’t an ITV Studios production?

Most episodes were struggling to get above 1 million. It was around 800,000-900,000. Compared to the second series of The Chase was easily getting above that.

Also the second series was secretly chopped up. Originally it was meant to be a 30 episode run but Endemol removed all teams who failed to complete round 2. Meaning they had enough footage to cut the series down by 7 shows.

I thought it did better than that – obviously not.

With Tipping Point now at 4pm and the huge recommission for The Chase it doesn’t look like anything new will be taking the 5pm slot in the near future (though there is that cooking show, but could see that moving to 4pm). I hope though ITV don’t make the same mistake as the BBC have made with Pointless and keep it in the slot all year by filling with repeats as I really think The Chase has benefitted from it’s ever shortening regular breaks.

A quick thought on Britain’s Brightest – is it me, or are they obviously dubbing on cheering on top of the polite applause that the crowd appear to be providing? Because the pictures they’re showing at the same time seem like a bit of a giveaway…

Small note. Applause Store seemed to have opened up a reserve list for a new series of Britain’s Brightest. Maybe a sign that it’s coming back?

That’s pretty standard behaviour from them.

They were taking waiting list applications for ‘The Magicians’ all through last year, before it vanished just before Christmas.

Either it was to see if there was and interest for live primetime magic again, or Shine forgot to tell them they didn’t get the Series 3 recommission.

Plus, The Bank Job was around on ‘waiting list’ for ages after the fantastically unexpected (and occasionally while it was on – unwanted) 2nd series ended.

I could live with it coming back, 4m isn’t brilliant but it has been basically consistent. Hopefully they’ll make better decisions next time.

I don’t think the issues are so bad they can’t be fixed.
