App Boyard

By | October 25, 2012

Whilst we’re getting all excited for the Halloween special next Wednesday (7:45 UK time, France 2) there’s an app out! And it’s in English!

The problem is, last time I looked, it’s only available in the New Zealand app store. I think we can all have a good guess as to why. Or at least it was this morning, may have changed now.

Still as soon as we can buy a copy in the UK it will be played and there will be an exciting review.

Here’s that trailer again because (spoilers notwithstanding) this looks like it’s going to be BLOODY BRILLIANT:

Also the Spanish version on YouTube, but that may well be common knowledge around here.

Being nice, you aren’t really missing much. It’s about $3, and you get about that value out of it, I’d say. Only played 2 challenges, four adventures, and a duel, and there was already a repeated game mechanic. It has the theme song, and a couple other ones here and there, but nowhere near a full score. There’s a baffling Simon game within the clue games at certain points. Seems to be going off 2011 games, as it had Branche, but with 2011’s new set style.

Overall, I wouldn’t exactly RECOMMEND it, but, hey, it’s cheap, so why not.

Then in one “short” playthrough, I got through, what a quarter or them? (Or more, depending on if it counts the duels and treasure room as games)

I can do a fuller review later on to post if ya want, if the game doesn’t pop up in the UK.

For a future edition of the Week, I’m planning to write about DIY media – game shows and podcasts and matters arising. This is directly inspired by “The Line Up”, and “Fifty50 Show”. But what else is there?

I’ve room for one or two more entries, and I want to give precedence to British productions. Audio or video, all I ask is that it’s an amateur hour production, not done by or for an existing big media company.

    What’s exciting you this week?

      Completely self-centeredly, there’s always Accumulate!

If I have the resources next year, (time isn’t the issue, but production equipment is!), then I have a new show that I’d like to make. Fingers crossed!

The closest thing I can think of is that I’m making Fort Boyard in Minecraft and I gather that someone will EVENTUALLY play it.

Now I think about it there could be some kind of decent scope for looking at machinima gameshows. Minecraft and Halo have lent themselves to a few ideas already. Granted, none of them are particularly new, but still.

Yes, didn’t someone mock up an episode of Crystal Maze using custom maps on Halo?

There was a whole series of it. From the guy responsible for Spartan Warrior, it was called Orbidome.

The gimmick was if you got 888 points they’d win a huge star prize. Thing is, it was pretty much impossible, so when it transpired that the team only got 200 or whatever, they were comically killed off in various ways.

Someone (probably Brig) posted a link to the Knightmare audio series. I haven’t listened to any yet but I love the concept, not least because it completely obviates my thought of doing Adventure Call: the podcast. (Accordingly I am currently contemplating Scavengers: the podcast.)

There was a pilot of an amateur similar-to-Knightmare game show produced back in 2010, but the actual series hasn’t emerged yet. And I think there are a couple of series of The Mole done in Minecraft, but haven’t watched any of them. And then, of course, there’s The Technical Difficulties Podcast.

There’s also a community in some 2d avatar involved chat service that I can’t remember the name of at the moment that regularly has live shows, including Countdown. Don’t think those are ever recorded, trying to get the info from someone who’s part of that atm I’ll let you know when I’ve got it.

…And if nothing else, there’s always Second Life’s Giant Snail Races… I think they’re still going, and at least one of the former commentators on that was British.

For own ideas, since we’ve kind of spun off into that, I’ve got a game (including video games, board games, sports and game shows is the idea, how it turns out in reality is partially determined by guests and partially on audience) panel show podcast idea in my head, but haven’t begun trying to organize that – There are a couple of logistical issues I’ll need to resolve first before I start.

Several years ago when I played the MMO “Kingdom of Loathing”, there was a culture of players hosting games and giveaways with in-game items (out of their own pockets) as prizes – there was even an in-game “games” channel for it, but it was too laggy for rapid quiz games. But there were quite a few people holding Deal or No Deal for various stakes, I did the endgame from Card Sharks / Play Your Cards Right on a couple occasions, and I’ve heard of people supposedly hosting The Price is Right, Press Your Luck, and Millionaire in there too. I also hosted Sale of the Century and Duel via IRC for a while. Unfortunately, all that seems to have fizzled out; I think because the games channel was overrun by people who just wanted the prizes. I’m not sure though; it’s been years since I’ve played.

Thanks, everyone! There’s enough there to fill at least two Weeks, so I hope it’ll be the first of an occasional series.
