BANGING ITALO

By | September 17, 2012

So yesterday night I discovered the guy on the piano on current Bother’s Bar Favourite Avanti un Altro! is Luca Laurenti, who has been host Paulo Bonolis’ comedy partner for the last twenty years or so. Which explains a lot. I love them both.

We also discovered his theme song for the show is on Youtube. Sing along if you know the words! There aren’t many of them!

And then I discovered you can buy the Ricordati Che Devi Morire EP on iTunes for £1.79. It apparently translates to “Remember That You Must Die”.

Amazing.

That German Pyramid endgame? Who came up with that one- really doesn’t fit the original (both the US and the German ones)…

I know The Banker on Deal or No Deal over here do some dirty things but what I’ve seen on Affari Tuoi tonight has taken it to an all new level of cruelty.

A contestant had three boxes remaining.

    €0.01
    €100
    Pacco Matto

She rejected an offer of €50. She chooses the next box which contained Pacco Matto. Out of the eight hidden scrolls, she chose the one with “Go or Stay”. This means the contestant can either “stay” and continue their game as normal or they can “go” and return to the wings and be selected for another game in the future. If she does that she will be replaced by a new contestant and will continue from where she left off in terms of the game. This was revealed in the blank envelope on the main table. Guess what she did?

Paolo Bonolis tells the story of how he met Luca Laurenti

in 1991 Paolo was hired to host Urka! the Italian version of Remote Control, and he held an audition to find a musician…

about the “remember that you must die” joke:

it’s a famous line from a movie titled “Non ci resta che piangere” where a school teacher (Roberto Benigni) and a janitor (Massimo Troisi) find themselves in the Tuscany of 1492.
    here’s the scene

Troisi’s line is “I’ll… note it down, don’t worry”

this inspires Laurenti’s “the end is nigh” running gag on Ciao Darwin 6

the joke spilled onto Avanti Un Altro!
here’s the first playing of the famous song. the words were “Remember that you must die. who will play? not you”

and this is the final version.

Paolo is famed for being stingy, so Luca gives him money to buy the song

    the lyrics:
    “remember that you too
    remember that you must die
it’s a game and looks easy
    it’s just a match
    and if you can’t answer
you stand up and it’s over
    but however things go
    remember that…”

Ha ha, brilliant, thanks Cele. And actually there’s a kind of Remote Control-ish strain running through Avanti un Altro, I think.

Nice to see that week 2 of Avanti Un Altro has a last question warning. This utterly penalises the contestant (just because they were later in line) in play by forcing them to surpass the champ’s total in that go.

      Yes, noticed that.

I gather last year they’d have been invited back on the next episode but that’s not the case this year.

It’s not quite a dealbreaker, that’s the nature of an ephemeral game and there’s got to be an ending somewhere, but I quite liked the Spanish speed round for the last five minutes.

I just started watching Avanti Un Altro. And I’m hooked. My Italian isn’t great, so I only understand about 1/3 of what they are saying. I appreciate the backstory about the theme song.
