Board of Excitement 8th – 14th July

By | July 8, 2012

Right, I’m busy for the next few days (although I will still be sproadically around) so here’s a Board of Excitement to tide you over:

  • The Great Escape (Sunday Night, TNT in the US) – Episode two of this turned out to be slightly more interesting than episode one, so we’ll see.
  • It’s my birthday (Monday, all day) – 31, in case you were wondering.
  • Amazing Race Australia (Monday) – This is still a great series generally, but there have been fewer surprising challenges compared to the first one this time round I feel.
  • All New Blockbusters (Challenge, 8pm) – The new series begins with a christmas celebrity special.
  • Who Wants To Be A Millionaire: The People Play – Three evenings of live shows beginning Monday at 9pm with members of the public. This time round you can play along at home and the results will get announced from the studio, and there’s an “Ask the Nation” lifeline. There will be a Show Discussion post set-up for these specials.
  • King of The Mountains (Thursday 8:30pm, Pokerstars) – it’s Le Tour, so it’s time for Le Tour(noi). $10 buy-in tournament. All the details here. It’s open to anybody elegible.
  • Reflex (Friday) – This is filming up in Salford. We have people going so look out for a write up.
  • Fort Boyard2011 episodes on TV5 (not being shown in the original broadcast order, in case you were wondering) on Saturday at 5:24 apparently, although it was meant to be 5:26 this week just gone and they slipped in a ten minute extra programme. Meanwhile episode 2 of the 2012 season goes out on France 2 at 7:35pm UK time, although that was about ten minutes late yesterday as well. Those pesky French and their timekeeping, eh? Discuss the 2012 season through this link.

Apparently Challenge have new new Ninja Warrior as of, er, Friday two days ago. Instead of stranding new episodes over the week, seems like they’re releasing two new ‘uns each Friday night from 10pm, repeated on Sundays at 10am. So already I have missed the first two, and strangely feel hopeful that I’ll find out what I missed in the third.

Two-per-Friday seems like a sensible enough way of doing things to me.

Yup, it’s tournament 27. Last Friday had the first 80 to tackle Stage 1, so the next will be the remaining 20, and probably enough for Stage 2.

‘Ask the Nation’ on Millionaire seems to have been dropped, play along game remains on the cards though.

I’m sorta happy. I know it’s not to the same degree but we tried this in America with AIM questions. Whenever someone used Audience during taping, AIM users were instantly sent the question and the results were displayed at the same time. It never worked out. If they are looking to save budget and make people lose more then it’s great, but other than that it was just a nightmare.

Again, I know the technology has improved going from AIM to live play-along results, but it’s the same result in the end and it’s already failed repeatedly.

I generally agree, you get more opportunity to interact with the studio audience if the outcome is amusing as well.

Phone a Friends are also appearing on screen this week. They’ve always been kept in isolation for the live shows but now they will be on camera for their ‘phone call’.

I know it’s not this week, but I’ve definitely got tickets to the Friday night taping of Don’t Blow The Inheritance, and might be going on the Saturday lunchtime taping too. I actually actively planned the end of my holiday around seeing this (and one other thing in London, in fairness), so it had BETTER be good.

I couldn’t believe how far Fort Boyard was off it’s bill time. I can’t think of any circumstances we’d be allowed to get away with that amount of time off billed at work, other than something live earlier on that overran massively.

Tour De France was on France 2 last year so that might be it – it’s been overrunning all over the place so far. Other than that they could have been trying to match the off-air of something on another channel; that’t not unheard of.

…and since it’s technically now Monday – Happy Birthday Brig!

France2 is making a series of “Volte Face”, an adaptation of ‘Trust’. Anyone familiar with that one? Distribution is of Banijay International.

I have seen a sizzler film for it. Two people answer questions together as a team to put money in a bank. At random intervals their trust us put to the test – their chairs move fo opposite ends of the platform and slowly move towards each other, the prizemoney increasing slowly all the time. If one of them presses their buzzer, they go home with whatever the money was up to. If nobody presses their buzzer, they can answer more questions, and after 15 questions they go home with an even split.

The focal point of the set is that the contesants sit on a sofa which splits in two and can travel along a platform.

No but they have made a pilot episode, George Lamb hosted it and I’ve seen the sizzler film. It is online somewhere, let me see if I can find it for you.

And we will get a new talent competition: A Million for a Miracle.

People with extraordinary skills will perform something spectacular, that science can;t explain.

Here’s a new report from Broadcast magazine about the upcoming Reflex pilot:
    http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/indies/objective-tests-reactions-of-bbc1-gameshow-rejected-by-c4/5044291.article

“Players take on a number of challenges over five rounds, including falling through eight-foot-high balloons and jumping through glass panels. Each round will be played multiple times, with only the fastest player going through. All the rounds will be captured in super slo-mo alongside two new techniques developed by the team behind GameFreeze, which is used on The Cube.”
