Roses D’or

By | May 11, 2012

Hello, sorry I’ve been doing a work thing the last few days.

The Million Pound Drop won best gameshow at the Rose d’Or last night, beating off The Cube and Still Standing. The Jack Whitehall episode, by the sounds of it. So well done them.

And now a tangentally related thing, I’ve been on XBox Live for a couple of years now, and absolutely one of the best things on it was their Inside XBox stuff fronted by Dan Maher and Andy Farrant. They might have silly haircuts, but they developed shows which were inventive and funny on a budget of 12p, and now as part of a Microsoft repositioning thing they’ve been sacked.

What I am basically suggesting that if anyone from telly is reading, you could do a lot worse then give these a guys a chance.

Wow, interesting actually. But the wording of the press release matched the Four Rooms one in places.

I actually applied to be a beta tester for this game and I just finished playing a game! Expect a YouTube vid sometime later on.

You and 5 other players play at the same time and answer 5 questions. One of them will be a Dis Or Dat (The one I got was to sort out ‘makes of vacuums’ and ‘brands of tampons’ :D) and the 5th question is the Jack Attack (I was shown various US towns and had to match which music festival was held in that town). I did really badly in the Jack Attack and ended up in last. Because I came in last, I got a spin of the Loser Wheel. Think of a Wheel of Fortune but with 2 thin wedges (one saying a Free Spin and the other with $50,000) and the rest of the wheel with $1. Naturally, I won $1 😀

What can I say, it might be a short version of the game, but it’s most definitely YDKJ. The best part is, you do have Cookie doing his usual schtick in the game.

        O_O Wow…

I just had a quick check of my emails and I was made a Beta Tester for the game at 00:55, nearly 2 hours ago! Talk about great timing!

Thanks very much for this, I applied for the Beta and got nothing back.

It’s a shame quite a lot is taken from last year’s game, although Hooves of Love was my fave advert in it, so.

There’s something not quite right about eliminating the race aspect to the Jack Attack. My gut says that if everyone can get each question, it should better reward those who get more difficult questions right – my current thinking is ($6,000/number of correct respondants). That would make for nice round numbers with six players.

          Looking forward to it.

I think you’d have all sorts of issues with people’s connection speeds not quite lining up, so it’d be hard to determine who was actually “first”. That said, I do like your $6k/correct plan, it gives a unique right answer to shoot out ahead, though it might need to be rebalanced so that one question doesn’t entirely make or break the game. Maybe $3k?

I really like the presentation. Something about the side panel with the scores and photos strikes me as “cool” in a way that the bottom layout of the recent release didn’t.

I’m not sure why it should be a massive issue if other Facebook games such as Millionaire and 5th Grader can offer bonuses to the quickest to answer, there’s some mileage to using a similar idea here actually – you’re in a group of six but you may as well be playing by yourself as it currently seems to stand.

Sorry, chaps. I’ve to take the video down as Jellyvision have requested I do so 🙁

They can do split second sync resolution on fighting games and even big standard Mario Katy Wii so I don’t see why it can’t be done here. I’ve been selected as one of the chosen ones so I’ll report that as part of my thoughts.

Ah, I think there’s something that’s not been made clear here. Although you ‘play’ against 5 other people, it’s not done in sync like, say, Call of Duty. You are basically taking a solo exam against which your score is being compared by other people who have taken the same ‘test’.

So really it’s somewhat smoke and mirrors. You get the feel of live play but without any of the delay. So you can’t really offer scores based on speed of response because the people who’ve played have already been awarded their dollar values.

I presume there will be a handful of people at the very very start (at least 5, anyway) who play a new episode without a full compliment of players to compete against, but I see that there are some achievements and incentives to cover that.

It’s a really great thing overall. It’s so fast and slick that it doesn’t feel like you’re in Facebook at all. The only thing I really don’t like is the option to basically cheat by buying score multipliers. I don’t mind paying for games, but I’d be a bit pissed off if someone’s beaten me in a game which we’ve both paid for but they’ve paid a bit extra.

too bad, no winner last night on Avanti. the prize was a record €325,000!

back in Italy, RAI announced the Gialappa’s Band as Italian hosts of the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest.

who are they? think of three Graham Nortons all together ^_^

they are three popular comedians who never appear on-screen and often comment events like the football Worlds or the Sanremo festival.

Since I’m a Beta Tester for the YDKJ game, I’ve been given an email that Jellyvision have put up a new build of the game. I’ve also been given 2 Early Access invites, so if 2 punters on here want to be able to use the game, just add me on the Book of Faces (my name’s Andrew Keshihead Sullivan on there) and I’ll shoot you an invite.
