Saturday Night Live

By | January 30, 2010

Not much today, but Total Wipeout‘s new series sort of starts this evening on BBC1 at 5:30, and Solitary 4.0 is on tonight in the US as well. I’m out this evening, but hope to have some fascinating opinions for you all tomorrow, alongside the Board of Excitement and some new old features.

    This…isn’t bad. Wow.

They should put mud on the Cradles of Doom and call them the Cradles of Filth. Ahahahahaha….no.

Besides the obvious, two major problems in tonight’s Total Wipeout:

    1) For the premier episode they should have had a contestant “motivated”. It just seemed rather pointless otherwise

    2) Skipping the obstacles in the Wipeout Zone was bad enough before but completely unforgiveable with the crazy sweeper

Without going into the same old problems which have been discussed many times, two issues I had really with tonight’s show. Firstly, the pointless name changed in the qualifier (though I do think Crash Mountain makes more sense than King of the Mountain) – and secondly the unnecessary changes made to the Wipeout Zone – both the balance beam and Tarzan Swing look cheap – and are cheap, whilst having one pointless turntable at the end rather than all three – a very stupid decision.

I just don’t get why they make these changes – it can’t be budget because the things are there already (indeed Turkey were using them before the UK filmed their series). And I would imagine that of all the broadcasters in Argentina, the BBC are amongst those who pay the highest for the rights to the show.

Curiously, the redone Wipeout Zone, combined with the stupid, stupid rules change in S2, means that now it’s only the first obstacle that matters (beyond ‘climbing a ladder while wet’), while before it was only the last obstacle that mattered (Since there isn’t enough time for the turntable to start, it’s basically ‘jump onto the podium from a stationary platform’

I don’t really mind name changes, if that’s what they need to do to make the jokes work then fine.

Being able to grip the sides of the rapids makes it too easy really. The Tarzan swing was particularly rubbish, I don’t think it’s even possible because the rope gets dragged through the water stopping momentum, and then the final table not actually respinning once they made it up was just a bit rubbish.

Once again it’s the Wipeout Zone that lets the show down really. I thought that Crash Mountain felt slightly better here than in the US, for whatever reason.

My only issue with Crash Mountain is the gameplay is essentially the same thing as the gameplay for Dizzy Dummies (First X to finish progress, last Y get eliminated), so using both seems a bit… Pointless. Probably will feel better when used alongside different third rounds (…In the UK, that would be the Dreadmill, then, wouldn’t it?)

Then again, there’s only a broadly limited amount of things you can do for how to whittle down the amount of contestants from one round to another, so I’m probably being a bit churlish there.

Well, the changes are for the positive on the whole. I have no problem with crash mountains involvement (slightly prefer the name king of the mountain but no deal breaker certainly). I would hope that it is on rotation with the sweeper please!

The blob needed to be less inflated, enough said.

Once again, it is the utterly utterly utterly STUPID rule change on th wipout zone that kills it.
I can see no fathomable reason for it! I thought it was a mistake the first episode i saw of s2. I cannot think of a single mistake made on any other show which has ruined precedings as much!

I think you’re right. If you look at the front of the podium, you can see that there’s a couple of gaps on either side of the main central section. If we were to assume that’s because the central section is an independent unit that could tip up…
