Board of Excitement 12th-18th June 2011

Right then:

  • Splatalot – Dick and Dom’s Kid’s Total Wipeout. There’s actually a few episodes up on Youtube of the Canadian version, it’s actually a co-production from channels in the UK, Canada and Australia, of which CBBC is one of them. What is most striking about the Canadian version is how similar it is to Wipeout in terms of styling, not just in the fact it’s two commentators standing in front of a blue screen but in it’s commentary rhythm and direction as well. To make it a bit different to Wipeout, there is a rotating regular cast of defenders to chuck stuff at the kids whilst acting comically. The two daily episodes don’t appear to be repeats of each other. (7:45am, 4:30pm, Weekdays, CBBC Channel)
  • The Amazing Race Australia – Last week’s was the weakest episode so far. Still, though. (Monday, Seven Network)
  • Fort Boyard 2010 – This week at the non-comedy time of 8pm bang on. (8pm, Monday, TV5 Monde)
  • Odd One In – Bradley Walsh returns with the show no-one was expecting to get a recommission. (7:15pm, Saturday, ITV1)
  • Penn and Teller’s Fool Us – Loved the pilot so looking forward to this a lot. Magicians perform in front of Penn and Teller, and if Penn and Teller can’t work out how it’s done, they pay them to go to Vegas and open their act. (8pm, Saturday, ITV1)
  • The Marriage Ref – It’s Judge the Grudge from The Big Breakfast applied to married couples, basically. Dermot O’ Leary makes the decisions aided and abetted by three celebrities. (9pm, Saturday, ITV1)
  • The Bother Series of PokerIT’S THE GRAND FINAL! Look out for details of the one-off HORSE Hilarity afterwards, to be played July 3rd, with $100 added to the prizepool. You can buy in now – Full Tilt, $20 + $2, T ID #239881938 Password: onlyconnect

There were a couple regulars who chucked stuff on Wipeout, though they never spoke or had names at all. Two of my favorite moments from that show happened with them in the same round, the “Wipeout Cafeteria” from last summer’s season. One of them was when they threw down a bucket of ketchup that took down all of the contestants in one shot, the other was when one of them came down to the playing area dressed as a cafeteria lady to throw glop at them, but ended up nearly slipping off the platform without firing a shot both times around.

There’s a lot of complaints on Twitter about how badly organised Red or Black is. They’re complaining that they had to wait 6 hours for essentially 10 minutes of footage where motorbikes flew into the air. It looks good for a couple of mins, but the rest of the time was just waiting around and boring.

    I smell a turkey…

But they’ve only filmed about 7 stunts which each last about 10 minutes, for 7 episodes. How are they going to fill the other 80 minutes? It doesn’t sound very entertaining.

Because each episode is meant to have ten games in it, most of which are recorded at Wembley or at the regional centres, three presumably live in the studio.

I think you’re right, there will be plenty more games than just the one per episode that is being filmed this weekend. I think there probably will be just one game per episode from Wembley but there will be more at the regional locations (where they will probably have more stunt-type games) and live in the studio. The bit at Wembley probably won’t make up much of the show’s running time. Also, apparently it won’t be one long 90 minute show per night. It looks like it’s going to be similar to the Britain’s Got Talent live shows, as ITV are saying it’ll be a 60 minute show and a separate 30 minute show each night. So 90 mins in total but it’ll probably be 8-9pm and then 9:30-10pm with something else for half an hour at 9pm. To me that suggests that the Wembley and regional bits will be the 60 minute show and then the later 30 minute show will be live from the studio. I suspect if they’re only doing 1 game per show at Wembley the regional stage will make up a greater amount of the running time, and will feature more games.

Well, they’ve got to get down to eight people for each of the live shows. The official stuff suggests you have to win 10 games to win the million and you are right that it has also been suggested much of the live shows are going to be about the journey.

So, Trish and Seamus’s Who Dares Wins records of eight wins and £170k – the former held jointly with James and Daniel – continue to stand the test of time…

But of all the contestants that Nat and Euan could lose their crown to, it had to be Gareth and Abby, didn’t it? 👿

Gareth wasn’t too bad, mind – but Jesus Christ, that Abby is definitely up there with the male half of Margaret and Jon from the last series among the most dislikeable WDW contestants ever… 👿 👿 👿

Especially when she looks – and even acts – uncannily like Nikki Grahame.

(I should point out that I’ve never warmed to NG…)

That said, Nat and Euan were really unlucky – following that magnificent performance on chemical elements, they rather got the short straw on the QoS team captains, IMHO.

Of course, all the obvious ones were answered (Beaumont, Botham, McCoist, Dawson and Tuffers) – but then G & A just had to make some impressive guesses, leaving N & E with pretty much nowhere to go… 👿 🙁

It was great to see a huge target of 40 reached with such ease.

I’ve got quite high hopes for this, Hints is strangely enjoyable despite the language barrier.

Obviously if they do a Win Lose or Draw Late on it it will be rubbish.

Just saw the debut episode of ABC’s version of 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show. Not the quickest thing on earth but it doesn’t feel like it drags on as long. In fairness, though, we do just have five rounds in 40 minutes. Most of the time is spent setting up exits and talking to contestants as we get to know them (Americanization).

8 people split into two groups. Each group is eliminated until 2 are left, making the final 4 that go on the Tower for the finale. The finale is the same as yours except it’s a 10 story straight free fall to the water with practically no support other than a safety line to keep you on track. Winner gets $50K. Quiz round is simplified also. No fake studio setting.

Looking at all the exits just on the first episode, your version is like Candyland compared to our version. No exit, except the finale, involved dropping someone.
