Show Discussion: Four Rooms

By | May 24, 2011

Tonight at 8pm on Channel 4.

Is it just going to be Dickinson’s Real Deal but with added game theory, trendy camera angles, “tense” music and a cast of eccentric characters, or will it be so much more than that?

Three minutes in we basically have all of the things I suspected it would, but the actual objects are quite interesting, and unlike Antiques Roadshow it looks like we’re looking at proper big money for a lot of objects.

    Otherwise it’s basically Dickinson’s Antique’s Den.

This would be quite interesting if we knew how much the dealers go on to flip it for, if at all.

Ho ho, eccentric dealer makes an offer determined by a dice roll.

I’m enjoying this more than I was expecting so far.

Even knowing it was coming in those terms, and with the over use of throw forward to that moment before the break, it still managed to surprise me.

Quite a good show so far. Reminds me of Dragons’ Den but different enough to be seen on its own right.

Very interesting, they didn save “the big one” until the end as you’d probably expect. They might have learnt some things from Dragon’s Den here.

I enjoyed it (and I’m not normally a fan on antique shows)

I’m not sure what there is to say about it really, it’s pretty much exactly as I was expecting but much more compelling than I was anticipating.

Surely the four dealers would have a decent idea of how far down the line they are by how long they’ve waited until the person comes in to see them?

It wasn’t bad. It would have been a very good daytime show if it was a bit lighter, but it’s not quite got the tension required for the slot it’s in.

My only format gripe is that when an early deal is done, there’s no way of telling that the dealers who miss out aren’t supposedly making up Mickey Mouse offers. Maybe they should be forced to put in a ‘bid range’ in an envelope and reveal that at the end.

I think there’s various ways of confusing the dealers with the timings. For example, they could see all the objects in the morning, then do all the deals in the afternoon. (I don’t think that’s really how it’s done but… just saying.)

You could also just get people to draw the order out of a hat. It’d be confusing for production, but if you can coordinate a bunch of people going into the rooms over the course of a day, I’m sure the dealers wouldn’t have a clue where in the order they were.

Hmm, not that exciting I don’t think, pretty sure another betting company were also offering a Money Drop game.

Having played the DoND game on that website and the DoND Live game on Facebook, can I ask why everyone uses 26 boxes and the 6-5-4-or something similar round sequence rather than the actual UK game-play?

Probably because it’s much easier to reskin something that you’d assume already exists, presumably.

Because that way they can just use whatever the back end is for the US (etc) versions of the show use rather than having to actually do non-presentation related work for it.

Or, in short, what Brig said.
