Royal Wedding Wednesday

Alright, what’s most surprising about the trawl through Youtube is that not only did Bob’s Your Uncle sell internationally variously throughout Europe (where it seemed to be called “Honeymoon” in the local language) but actually the last remake wasn’t that long ago. Witness, if you would, Hasta Que La Tele No Separe from 2006. It is Spanish and not the first version of the show they had:

The more I read into it, the more I’m beginning to suspect that Bob’s Your Uncle and Love Letters *may* have come from the same stem… wish I could see some credits to be sure! It looks like the original Honeymoon Quiz in Spanish was a co-production between Action Time and Joop van de Ende. Both shows started after BYU, and whilst Google will translate “Traumhochzeit” as dream wedding, “hochzeit” actually means honeymoon doesn’t it? Interesting, I think.

The online buzz and reaction for yesterday’s launch of The Voice on NBC has been nothing short of incredible. It’s made a huge impact, viewers have responded with an overwhelming positive reaction to the premise, concept and execution of the show. I can not wait for the Nielsen ratings to come in, I expect huge figures by NBC’s standards.

This show has stolen The X Factor’s thunder by launching 6 months earlier. I truly believe the success in America will result in numerous other territories acquiring the show. It’s a massive hit.

We’ll see, I know what an Endemol Joe ‘massive hit’ is like. I like the way you’ve qualified it with “by NBC standards”.

Saying this, even Reality Blurred whose opinion I trust a lot has suggested it wasn’t as crap as he was expecting.

Regretfully it goes over massive hit for NBC and becomes respectable hit for any network. Started at a 7.5/12 rating for 9PM to 11PM. Still 2nd place in each half hour but regardless, there we go. We’ll see if it erodes at all. Never know. I didn’t watch the show (I don’t like shows like this) so no comment.

Fantastic start to The Voice yesterday. I’ve been told that according to preliminary numbers, it had about 12 million viewers and was #1 A18-49 in its slot. These are preliminary numbers so are subject to change, we should hear the confirmed Nielsen data within 2 hours.

Wow, for the first time ever you might have backed something worthwhile, Joe – it had to happen eventually. If it’s still doing well in a fortnight’s time I’ll concede I was wrong.

A dip in the ratings for next week’s is expected (all shows lose viewers for their 2nd episodes) but it’s a promising start which gives it the platform to survive in the tough US market.

          3. Brig Bother Post author

Yes, I’m expecting a dip but I’ll take that into account – NBC really threw everything behind promoting the premiere, the question is by how much? If what Alex is saying is correct, the fact that the audience stuck with it is probably a good sign.

            Half hour breakdowns.

            9:00 p.m.: 6.9/10 (#2)
            9:30 p.m.: 7.5/11 (#2)
            10:00 p.m.: 8.0/12 (#2)
            10:30 p.m.: 7.7/13 (#2)

Kept getting viewers until 10:30PM which makes sense. Built from the lead-in show, Biggest Loser (why do people love watching heavy people exercise?) by 56% and it was up week-to-date by 63%. Most likely number one in the demos, which is just about all that matters really. So there we go.

Minute to Win It should be very, very afraid right now. It’s tanking (it’s getting fewer viewers than The Cube which is pathetic), NBC apparently has a reality show that has clicked with the audiences (Minute never has other than a small group which came out to watch during summer), and they have two other game shows this summer. It used to survive solely based on the fact that NBC had nothing better. With new shows coming this Fall, that’s not becoming the case.

Don’t knock it, fat people singing is Endemol’s next big hit format. The working title is The Next Big Thing.

Confirmed ratings for The Voice are in: a massive 11.8 million viewers and 5.1 A18-19 demo watched last night.

That is the BIGGEST launch audience in the demo for ANY new TV show on ANY network this season. It is the HIGHEST demo rating for ANY NBC TV show this season apart from sports. It was the HIGHEST demo rating for any TV show yesterday on ANY network.

I called this last Autumn when I told you that The Voice was the next big thing. This show has defied expectations of media experts who said it was impossible for it to launch any higher than a 4.0-5.0. It’s gone higher and the reaction has been immense. This, I tell you, is the Next Big Singing Format in America, NOT The X Factor.

We’ll blow the trumpets when the rating are positive throughout the season (I.e constant gaining viewers each week til the finale – Last time that happened for a gameshow – it was survivor and pop idol that was in 2000?)

As you have mentioned before – Recommisioning is based on costs too – Its getting huge ratings…It should be! At a price of 1.4 mil per episode I’d expect it too

In short don’t count the chickens before they’ve hatched – many shows have got excellent ratings first show only to die mid season.

It’s obvious ratings won’t keep rising every single week (maybe towards the end of the series near the finale but not early on). So if it dips, don’t be surprised because that’s what happens to 99% of new programmes but it’s started at a very high level so it gives the show plenty of insurance to dip.

A cost of $1.4 million per episode might be expensive for a reality show but NBC routinely pays double that for scripted programmes that don’t even get 1/3 of what The Voice got yesterday. So for a business like NBC, $1.4m per episode is not much and not as much an issue to them as it would be for a British broadcaster where budgets are more limited.

Every new drama that launches costs double what The Voice did last night. So do you expect all of them to launch with 5.0+? You don’t! The 5.1 A18-49 was way higher than what media commentators expected.

TV By the Numbers brings up some interesting statistics – [just] 4% higher than the premiere of The Marriage Ref (one season and done) and it’s the highest premiere since American Gladiators (two seasons and done). It’s a great start I grant you, but let’s not kid ourselves that makes it an automatic success, especially as there are likely to be spoiler tactics from the other networks.

However, I think you are right about The X Factor, I think Cowell’s messed it up on both sides of the pond. Everyone’s bored of discussing who the judges are going to be and it just looks like weakness.
