In the Dark

Thanks to Buzzerblog for the heads-up, Popmonkey TV have bought the rights to “international comedy hit” (apparently) In the Dark, and are hoping to sell it it MIPCOM starting next week.

For those who don’t remember, a pilot was filmed with Julian Clary for ITV in 1996 (he also filmed a series in the States, but was pulled hours before broadcast). In fact it was picked up by Channel 5 and fronted by Junior Simpson, where nobody watched it.

Here’s the pilot!

I may be the first American not employed in the game show biz to have tried to see this.

I never heard of the story of it selling in the USA, then getting pulled six hours before it was to air. Good story–if it is true!

If any American producer tried running this with a host like unto Julian Clary, he’d be run out of town on a rail! GLAAD and other like-minded organizations would be up in arms over such a flagrant–or is that “fragrant”–gay stereotype as Mr. Clary projected on this one. Further, Mr. Clary showed that he was entirely aware of just what he was getting into!

From what I understand, this sounds like the kind of program that Channel Five would enjoy broadcasting. If what I read of them is accurate, it would fit their target audience to the proverbial “T”.

I have no intention of showing this to any of my friends. At least one of them claims to have “gaydar”: an ability to discern whether a person is straight or gay just by observation. Science seems to indicate that there is no such phenomenon as “gaydar”. But if there is, there’s no need to set the alarm bells ringing!
