Board of Excitement 20th-26th February 2011

By | February 20, 2011

Wooh! My copy of You Don’t Know Jack! has arrived! Expect some things about it in due course. In the meantime let’s see what’s happening this week:

  • The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business – i.e. they didn’t win first time round. This time one of them will win… in HD! (Sunday, CBS)
  • Survivor: Redemption Island – First episode of this was quite entertaining thanks in the main to Philip who professes to be a former secret agent and comes across as a bit of a fanatasist. He’ll probably win. We should get to see Redemption Island this week, but the first duel won’t be until next week. (Wednesday, CBS)
  • Control – two pilots film on Wednesday, fingers crossed for a recording report.
  • Maa Al Tayar/Power Struggle – haven’t had the chance to watch this yet, hope to tonight. Show discussion here. (JCCTV Sky Channel 823 3:30pm/8:30pm repeat Friday and Saturday)
  • Accumulate – (Friday, RU:on)
  • Ant and Dec’s Push the Button
  • The National Lottery Secret Fortune – I’m only really listing these to bulk it all out. Both shows are good but could have done with another pair of eyes at production stage I think. Still, Secret Fortune is doing well for itself, despite so few being able to get their heads around the final few questions. (7:30pm ITV, 8:20 BBC 1 Saturday respectively).
  • Bother Series of Poker Game 4 – the first BIG MONEY deepstack game is next week. Why not join us why don’t you? (8pm, Sunday, Full Tilt)

And at some point I’ll be giving away an old copy of The Running Man on DVD.

Second Qualification QF on Uni Chal this week: Peterhouse Cambridge v Queens’ Cambridge.

This is the second time Peterhouse have run into a fellow Light Blue college – having faced St John’s in the second round, where of course they led by 140 points but had to wait until the last starter to secure the win, 215-205. In between, they never looked worried against Exeter (265-165) or York (205-120). Ben Slingo has been their best buzzer by far, picking up 21 starters.

In all fairness, Queens’ have had to rely on their buzzer work to get this far. Against Oxford colleges Balliol (190-155) and Merton (175-120) they didn’t have much luck with the bonuses, and against Bristol they were 160-80 behind with a few minutes to play, before scoring 110 without reply. Most of that buzzer work has been done by Mark Jackson, who has 19 starters.

Stakes will certainly be high in this one as the winners will take the second semi-final spot, while the losers could well face Magdalen, who destroyed Christ’s last week. I expect Peterhouse to be the winners, though it would be surprising if there wasn’t a buzzer battle between Slingo and Jackson.

Meanwhile, the 13 February episode of Brain Box turned out to be the last – so late-night UTV and STV viewers will have to put up with shows like Nightwatch with Steve Scott once again.

Unless, of course, it’s decided that The Zone should be shown in NI and Scotland… 😈

I haven’t got my PC version of YDKJ-2011 yet, but according to the reviews on Amazon, the PC version isn’t as good as the 360 and PS3 versions due to only having 2 players, no DLC and no internet play, but I didn’t really have a lot of choice in the matter. I’ll still get some enjoyment out of it if it works.

I DID, however, get a used copy of YDKJ2 off eBay and it works perfectly.

Quizzing.co.uk is now back online within the last hour. Jane informs me that nearly all the accounts have been wiped so you’ll need to re-register but all the posts from the old forum is still there.

Apropos of nothing, they tidied up some of the font issues on Secret Fortune this week – with the teeny tiny Helvetica numbers gone and replaced with their chunky house font. So well done them.

The only thing they need to fix now is to make the envelope number reveal in the final round more dramatic – it needs to come full screen on the display board a bit like the safes on Take It Or Leave It. At the moment it’s like squinting at 8pt text.

After what i thought was a very stale opening episode of Survivor, i just don’t think i can get on with Rob and Russell being there again, i thought i may have similar issues with TAR.

Not the case at all, the first episode was so action packed i feel like i have been supping Red Bull all evening. Not only have the got the team selection bang on, but i also like the production this time which is where i had concerns last time. As even though i watched the whole episodes i felt i had missed bits in the last series.

This time to combat this they have 24 style screen splits to show how 2 different teams are doing at certain parts. While only used at 1 part it is just enough IMO that it does not detract from the feel but keeps you upto date with how teams are doing.

The Express Pass is back and i am glad the second place team did not get it, as i think they would panic and use it too soon. I think it is in safe hands with a very underestimated team, should make for an interesting season.

Most of my favourite teams are back, especially Mel & Mike, which is why I’m quite worried for next weeks episode, I really don’t want an early exit for my favourite team of all time.
