Show discussion: Schlag den Star

By | November 5, 2010

Because we haven’t done one of these yet, why not have a discussion post for Friday’s Schlag den Star? It’s on 7:15 UK time, and hopefully someone will pop-up with a live stream address.

Oh! It’s Million Pound Drop (The) this evening also.

No doubt the BBC will be doing their own cookery show similar to Ready, Steady, Cook but not have to pay license fees to an independent company because presumably it’ll be a BBC Production. It does annoy me a little bit when this happens.

You do agree, though, that RSC had its day long ago, don’t you?

No, it didn’t have its day. But have you not noticed that the daytime shows which the Beeb are axing tend to be non-BBC productions? 😉

I think there’s a natural limit to how many series of Pointless they can make, especially given the sub-optimal formatting of series 1 which burnt up a lot of material. I’d say that Only Connect is in a similar position – it’ll be hard for it to go on forever.

But it’s fun to have while it’s around.

What they’ll have to do is, when you think you’re starting to repeat yourself, let another puzzle author take over for a series, make a hash of it, then have them run back to you for a triumphant final run now it has been shown how not to do it… (This is an in-joke. Exactly that has happened before.)

On the other hand, Treasure Hunt, The Crystal Maze and Knightmare all had mid-to-high single-digit numbers of series, so perhaps a glorious but finite run is what puzzle-based shows can hope for.

I don’t know about “have it’s day”, but wasn’t it meant to be getting axed several years ago because of the success of Deal or No Deal? In that sense, it’s done quite well running on fumes. I am not massively happy it’s being axed, but at the same time – meh, haven’t watched it in years.

Perhaps Hairy Bikers’ Hairy Cook-Off will get a longer run.

Pointless will probably be OK, or at least they’re making a fourth series of it.

No, it didn’t have its day.

            🙄

Come on, it quite clearly HAD had its day!

In its final years, celebrities were the only challengers, there were no tie-in books, it was being shuffled around the BBC2 schedules – and no-one was talking about it!

And, going by the comments on that Grauniad article, seemingly no tears are being shed over its departure…

It’s still a good format, though. It’s the “Countdown” of the daytime cookery show world.

          6. Des Elmes

It didn’t have quite as much of a cult following as Countdown, though…

Incidentally, last night’s “Autumnwatch: Unsprung” took the form of a somewhat shambolic quiz show. Unsprung tends to be pretty rough’n’ready anyway, but that was… er… let’s never speak of it again.

How can you say that? Everything BBC Natural History Unit makes is great! Everything!! Even the title is brilliant despite it not making any sense in this season!!! I hate it when people criticise BBC Natural History Unit when they don’t know what they are…

I can’t keep this up. This trolling business is a lot harder than it looks. I’d love to watch Schlag den Star tonight but the pub calls.

While I’m here, does anyone know exactly how long the monitors stayed on the random colours in the Krypton Factor response wall round? I haven’t got the ability to do frame-by-frame timings right now but rough timings come in at just under 2 seconds.

Tonight’s show sees Uli takes on Mike Kruger for €50,000. Kruger is a well known comedian in German, he is possibly the eldest opponent at 58 years old.

Uli can use his “joker” for one game where he is replaced by Stefan Raab.

Same scoring system, up to nine games in total, if Kruger win then the jackpot will be €100,000 for next week.

All games have been played before on Schag den Raab. Each episode of Schalg den Star has a regular game called Quiz.

    Game 1 – The Tanker

Uli and Mike have to push tankers of beer down a table the furthest, best of five. Mike wins 3-1.

    Uli 0-1 Mike

    Game 2 – Tennis
Best of three sets, each set consists of tie-break scoring used in professional tennis (first to seven with a score of two clear or if tied at 6-6 have to be two clear to win a set).

I actually wish I was around to watch this game. I’ve played this before, but only casually, so it’s not like there was much at stake but pride. I’d’ve liked to have seen a higher-intensity playing of it.

    I don’t know what game I’m coming in on, I think it’s number 6. It’s a name-the-things-by-the-smells game.

Both seem to struggle at the beginning, but Uli wins 5-4. It’s now 20-1 Uli, Matchball.

Game 8 is throwing grapes over a raised bar and catching them in your mouth on the other side. Most of 8 wins. Uli is already up 1-0 after the first one, so I’m expecting this to end pretty quickly.

So Matchball has been swerved, and replaced by that ol’ favorite, chuck a grape up over a wooden construction and catch it on the other side in your mouth..

Uli catches 3 grapes to Mikes 1 – Uli wins
And so wins 27-1. And trousers 50,000 euros.

    Night all in Bar land.

It’s Joey Kelly for next Friday. He is a musician and one of Stefan’s TV Total mates. He regularly appears in the TV Total events.

In terms of show wins, it stands at Challenger 5-1 Star. Only Stefan Effenburg managed to beat the challeger on the very first show.
