It turns out you CAN in fact get the Stauf these days.

Not strictly gameshow related, but something that may prove of interest, legendary sort-of-Crystal-Maze-in-a-haunted-house 90s PC game The 7th Guest is getting a release on iDevices next month. It was one of the first games to use full motion video, and is effectively Professor Layton fifteen-years ahead of Professor Layton, with added blood and horror.

What with You Don’t Know Jack making a resurgence (they’d better bring it out for the UK, is all I’m saying), we’re truly entering a golden age of videogames that are a little bit like gameshows sort of.

Given all the discussion around The Cube here of late, when did the boardgame go on sale?

Early August when the Autumn/Winter Argos catalogue came out as an Argos exclusive but not Debenhams are now selling the game.

Yes, I thought I remember it being marketed as an exclusive originally – is widely available now at most outlets.

YDKJ is coming out on PC and DS, so if you have either of them (and the former would be evidently obvious), importing’s always an option.

The one problem I have with YDKJ coming out on PC is that it appears to be on a DVD-ROM (as compared to a CD-ROM). For reasons I’ve not been able to figure out, my CD/DVD drive doesn’t recognize DVDs when you put them in. (It has no problem reading or burning CDs.) So, rather amazingly, I am again left with absolutely no method of playing the game without buying another whole console (or another disk drive, which is admittedly a much cheaper option).

I’m considering drafting up a letter asking if they would consider putting the game on Steam. I’ll admit that because I lack gaming consoles proper, I’ve become somewhat of a Steam fanboy. I honestly think the multiplayer play would be great on Steam (or at least, as great as XBLA or PSM), and considering that a PC version is already being made, porting it to Steam wouldn’t be too much of a problem in my mind. Before I try contacting Jellyvision, are there any significant factors that I’m missing that would make a Steam port improbable or impossible?

The 7th Guest on the iphone? A-woo hoo!!!

As someone who has had a copy since the days of windows 95, i’ve been waiting for this day for such a long time

    *sniff*

    I’m quite emotional!

Let’s hope the sequel 11th hour follows soon after (Much scarier in my opinion)

I found the treasure hunt element of The 11th Hour a bit tedious, unfortunately. I still would download it though.

I finally got around to finishing the 11th hour a couple of months back, and discovered that it has the most disappointing ending in the history of endings. 7th guest is much better IMO. Enjoyable puzzles though.

Facts amazing: I was once on a BBC training course on interactive games and one of the speakers was 7th Guest writer Matthew J Costello. Nice chap.

The Amazing Race is finally getting with the times- it looks like next season will be shot in HD for the first time…

Talking of Amazing Race, the BBC have dumped their Steve Jones fronted rip-off “Drop Zone” into a 3.30pm slot on Sundays. That probably says it all!

Oof. Maybe they’ll run the credit roller with a black border around it, in recognition of the many careers that will be destroyed.
