Show discussion: All Star Family Fortunes, 71 Degrees North

Two new series on ITV1 tonight, one a returning favourite, the other a new reality show that’s big in Norway.

All Star Family Fortunes this evening features Keith Duffy vs Jenny McAlpine. So when is that follow-up to The Door coming, then? This is one of the few shows this evening Gavin Henson is not a contestant on.

Perhaps more interestingly, 71 Degrees North challenges celebs to trek across the tundra to Europe’s most northerly point doing challenges to earn warmth and immunity along the way. Expect lots of challenges involving being very cold. Gethin Jones and Kate Thornton host.

71 Degrees North looks like it is effectively Survivor on Ice with celebrities.

Yeah, as stuff ITV’s done, it’s quite good. I’ll be watching the series out.

Just a note that it seems that all remaining episodes of 71 Degrees North are on Tuesday nights. I presume they showed the initial one on Saturday to get a bigger audience to start with.

Will be interesting to see how that audience holds up on Tuesday nights.

Ironic too to see Survivor back on TV after eight years the night after BB end.

Yes, I had wondered for a long time whether Survivor: The Arctic would be viable. The results are quite good, and it didn’t do too badly in the ratings either, comfortably above 4.5m according to DS.

My onyl concern is that yes, the arctic is beautiful… but it’s all painfully samey to look at. It also seems unlikely 71 Degrees North will have the variety of tests Survivor has – I hope they’re not all going to concentrate on Being Cold, although I suspect that’s exactly what they’re going to be.

I’d be intrigued to see Andrew Castle as a contestant on Divided.

Next one has some high-rise net climb, but other than that I don’t know what else they can do, other than eating so rather nasty Norwegian delicacy or kickboxing with a polar bear.

Well I know there’s another ice swimming one (this time underwater), because I’ve seen it in the trailers.

However, kickboxing with a polar bear sounds likely.

And what’s the arctic equivalent of The Great Standing On a Log Challenge? Standing on an ice floe until it melts? Standing on Ratings Polar Bear until it eats someone? Standing on a penguin until it sinks because the chocolate’s frozen?

Can someone give a brief synopsis as to the structure of each weeks episode. With Survivor it’s mainly Reward challenge, Immunity challenge, vote – and i flicked through a couple of mins of 71 Degrees North but couldn’t work out what was going on. I hope to watch the full programme at some point.

Well certainly in the first episode – group chooses two team captains, schoolyard pick, team reward challenge (win a room for the night), individual immunity, vote off. Teams don’t seem to count for the vote off, I believe the schoolyard pick will happen each episode.

Just watched Saturday’s 71 Degrees North now – enjoyed it, it’s promising for an ITV reality show, though it was a shame it was so blindingly obvious who was getting voted off. They mention in ‘coming up’ that it was a landslide, and there was really only one person who was going to be voted out by everyone. The only other potential person (Andrew) was seen in other ‘coming ups’ for following episodes.

The show also made it obvious in a coming up which team won the dog-sled race too. Shame…
