Late Night Poker is on Channel 4

By | September 1, 2010

I have just discovered three-quarters of the way through.

I can’t work out who is lead commentator with Robert Williamson III… is it TV’s Richard Orford?

I like Orford when he’s goofing on Sky Poker, but he doesn’t have the insight or the authenticity to add to the commentary here. Accordingly, I’m going to watch the rest of it tomorrow.

When does Premier League Poker IV start?

Yes I absolutely agree here, I really like RO normally but he’s not right for this at all. And more shrill than usual for some reason.

Premier League is usually really late or really early in the year, isn’t it? I’m happy I’ve managed to avoid spoilers at any rate. Really wish they’d show these things a bit nearer to time.

However, by following the links on the right, I came across this clip of the US Jep-ee-dee, which must contain the best runners-up prize goodie bag from hell..

I wonder when they started giving out cash for questions a la the US version? Pretty sure for most of the run it was a straight £500 for a win, bonus £500 if you made five days.

I had actually forgotten The Amazing Race was due to start again. I know BB ending and Survivor are beginning on the same night, but that’s about it.

And apparently winners of the first episode will be “awarded a surprise, game-changing advantage”. So there we are.

That info is new to me- I wonder what the advantage will be?

If I have to hazard a guess? Perhaps they’re given a special power that they can use once in the Race- perhaps a “Jump The Line” option where they can go from wherever they finished in the previous leg to starting say 30 minutes ahead of the team that had finished first? It could be a very useful weapon- especially if the team barely survived a leg (or maybe even came in last on a non-elimination leg)…

Yes, could be something like a 1 hour pit stop advantage where you get to leave one hour before you would have done.

            Sept 26th- it’s a 90-minute opener.

After thinking about it, the one possible problem with a jump the line thing is that there are a ton of legs where the time difference is essentially meaningless, due to operating hours or flights or other bunching points.

I had two more ideas as to what it could be-

-They get a chance to skip any one Roadblock and/or Detour of their choice- somewhat like a Fast Forward, but they still have to do all the other things in a leg- they don’t skip everything.

-They have the chance to set the starting order for the 2nd leg- perhaps putting weak teams near the top so they have a better chance of surviving and putting strong teams at a time disadvantage…

          2. David

OK- based on info that spoiler sources have found out, it looks like that the new twist will let a team skip a single Detour or Roadblock task of their choice, and get the clue automatically from that location (they’re not 100% on it, but they’re pretty sure this is right). Apparently it’s called the EXPRESS PASS.

Hello, long time lurker here, but a first time poster (I played the Fantasy X Factor last year if that counts?)

Just wondering if it had been posted that there’s a game on pub quiz machines that’s VERY similar to Duel (quiz version, not Gladiators version)?

It’s the same without the speedy-upy things really.

It’s called Head 2 Head or something similar. Noticed that a few of you have said it should come back to daytime recently, at least its something?

      Hey Andy,

Yes I’ve seen it, it looks like a barely disguised rip off really, although I’ve yet to actually play it.

I’ve played it one time, and I won £3 on it (with a bit of guessing, I must admit)! So, I shall not play it again so I keep my 100% record in tact.

Any opinions on the change to the format of Pointless again today? Seemed like a rather blatant attempt to bolster the jackpot total to me – I’m wondering if they’ll keep bringing in the multiple choice bit sporadically whenever they feel like it, or whether they’ll just play them both in random orders?

Personally, I was very sad to see that one making a return – seemed to take away the whole basis of the show.

I think the problem is – and it’s an inherent problem with the format – it’s probably pretty difficult to generate a comprehensive list of every tropical fruit in the world. So by providing choices, it avoids the problem.

That said, you’d think they could generate a list of the most likely ones people would know, and then if there was anything that did happen to come up that wasn’t on their list, a quick Google could sort out the matter fairly swiftly. But they’ve had accuracy problems before on this programme, which is why they’ve now started to get the questions verified by external people since about midway through last series.

I think the bigger problem is: they had a fun second round earlier in the week, and they’ve gone back to the inferior one. Brilliant!

Worse than that – the multiple choice replaced the FIRST round. So there was no “free choice” question until the head-to-head.

The new second round is still there. They have used the second round from the second series as the first round for today. So it looks like they will be rotating between choosing from a list and classic Pointless.

Blimey, that sounds rubbish and has spoiled my bedtime viewing 🙁

That’ll teach me to comment before watching, which HARDLY EVER happens.

      2. BigBen

I have to say I was mighty puzzled what exactly the question would be when “fruit” came up as the category.

The only downside I can think of to your suggestion, David, is that revealing the pointless answers at the end of a less-than-definitive list becomes a bit of an academic excercise if people at home have come up with really obscure things that they haven’t thought of in the studio.

All I can say is I’m relieved they haven’t gone down the desperate route of finding surveys and opinion polls like they seem to have on Who Dares Wins, making it less of a general knowledge quiz and more of a “guess which was the 50th most popular film among vegetarians” game. (The UKGameshows Top 100 being the obvious exception, of course – everyone should be more than famliar with that!)
