Show Discussion: Tempting Fortune

By | March 25, 2023

Sundays and Mondays at 9pm,
Channel 4

Paddy McGuinness challenges 12 people to yomp across South Africa in an arduous journey to win a shared £300,000 – that’s £25,000 each! But there are temptations in store along the way, expensive ones designed to make life easier in the moment, that will knock money off. And if someone leaves £25k gets knocked off automatically. Will there be anything left to split at the finish line?

It’s not quite a new idea, Stranded With A Million Dollars and Money Game have explored the “big prize but £1,000 for a cup of tea” idea internationally and this is coming on the scene amongst a bit of a terrestrial reality gameshow glut and may well get a bit lost. Perhaps of interest, perhaps not, it’s a co-production with Roku and will show on The Roku Channel in the US at some point in the future.

But is it any good? Let us know in the comments!

Pretty much what you would expect really, contestants casted in such a way that one is a ‘leader’. a couple are ‘moaners’ and the rest just sort of get on with it and fade away into the background

Perhaps my biggest problem is when you break it down the £25,000 doesn’t sound quite as excitable as Paddy with his ‘THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND POUNDS’, even if a contestant quits it is still…£25,000 as they take £25,000 out of the pot for their flight home (and all this assumes a perfect game without taking any temptations which is obviously not going to happen in a million years)

I do however already sense a twist coming at the finish line in regards to ‘splitting their share of the prize fund’

Only 6 episodes and seemingly on a Sunday/Monday schedule so at least I’ll probably stick with it until the end unlike Rise and Fall…

I think this might be the best summary. I watched it, they did it well, I enjoyed it, but I can see where the arguments almost certainly go from here and I’m not sure that’s for me.

Still, I think there’s a lot to be said for a show where the premise is actually understandable easily.

The Sun are reporting that although it hasn’t been officially recommissioned yet by Channel 4, “the wheels in motion” for a second series of this.

It was probably the best performer of the glut if C4’s new reality offerings last year, so it wouldn’t be out of the question.

The fact channel 4 is in a financing nightmare scenario currently it surprises me this got recommisioned.
