It started in The Netherlands, the first series was a hit, the second series did OK but took a significant (i.e. about a third) fall. And there’s been a third on a streaming service.
Already we’ve got versions coming in the UK, US, Australia, France, Belgium, Norway and probably quite a few other territories I’m not aware of.
I love This Sort Of Thing so I’m hoping it’s good and a success, but there’s an element of unproven, unearned success here and I’ve a horrible feeling it’s the next Too Big To Fail format heading for a fall.
Last big one was probably The Masked Singer, wasn’t it?
I think you’re right, but that felt different somehow.
Yeah, *technically* it counts? South Korea was doing it since 2015, but once the US series came out in 2019 it exploded.
Yeah – Masked Singer or The Voice would be the two most recent candidates popping up in my mind for an entertainment franchise going global at a very fast rate.
Speaking of “exploding” – our French version there managed an impressive feat in its two first episodes, managing to break M6’s all-time record on target share for a new programme that evening with 40% (thanks to a very favorable lack of competition that day), beating the previous holder that was Loft Story (Big Brother) very first live show. Quite an achievement, still.
Ooh, interesting they got theirs done and dusted in six eps:
