Show discussion: The Million Pound Drop ep 2 onwards

By | May 25, 2010

It might be worth starting a new post for the second episode as the one for episode one got quite big. So here you go.

Edit: Well, this feels like a slightly better show this evening.

Davina: “Half a million of you caused heatworld.com to crash because you were trying to cheat! Don’t do it! You know who you are!”

In a way, she’s just like Marmite – you either like her for what she is, or you don’t.

The audience were starting to get quite restless there in those last few moments before Nevada dropped.

Didn’t see there – did Gemma put, er, those four units on Date Night herself?

    Bad move IMO.

I do wonder if Davina was being sarcastic when she said that Gemma looked like being a smart girl…

It’s blatant the crowd were helping them with that question!

Thr crowd kept cheering “come on” when she hinted at putting money on Dizzee Rascal. As soon as she suggested putting money on Tinneh Temper, the crowd said “nooo”. This is a flaw with the game!

And that suggestion of hers has cost them three units, to go with the four blown by her earlier suggestion of Date Night.

That said, they’re well on course to be the show’s first winners.

Obviously another chronological question before the actual question was revealed.

Some good guesswork means they get to the penultimate question with still just more than half their units.

      Followed by yet another…

It’s clear they really want the audience behind them.

Finally found a stream, came in in time for question six. I’m glad I’m seeing episode three, because what I’m seeing is pretty neat. Granted, I’ve also missed the five questions leading up to this point, but this is pretty good.

IMO there should be a 1 vs 100 style twist here – i.e. ‘Collect 10% of your money before we reveal the answer’ (Bail)

    But there won’t be

Agree though better if its a final question only thing

Gemma’s name tag is on the point of falling off as we come to the final question – and Davina tosses her coin for the first time.

And it’s a third chronological question on the bounce.

And guess what – they’re going to lose! After all of that!

Well that blows the £100k loss on IITWI on a 1 in 3 chance out of the water!!!

Doesn’t that make them the biggest losers on UK television (biggest so far would be 468k on millionaire)

    1. Simon

In monetary terms, yes but Millionaire gives the player the option to take the money. It could be argued that every contestant has lost £1m in this series.

True though arguably as they would of actually won the 525k if they got it right rather than been a scoring device it would be a proper loss while Q1-7 losses wouldn’t count

It can be argued but it’s certain tonight is the most money lost on a single question in the UK.

I wonder if that is actually a world record?

That was a horrible final question. Obviously one of the dates ought to have been well known but the other one could have been either side of it.

But Laurence and Jackie Llewelyn-Bowen got that £468k back when that question about US mottos turned out to be ambiguous.

Wiki says no. But that US guy lost $475,000 a while back if that’s what you’re thinking of.

No civillian has lost £468,000 on Millionaire, two have lost £218,000 though.

I should re-edit my statement as “most money lost on a single, game ending question in the UK”. As the gay couple lost £626,000 but they are still in the game.

I think she had to this time because the producers couldn’t see how much was placed on each answer.

Hm. I might redact my earlier statement, it appears I simply came in on an amazing instance. Now that this new couple has already lost 625k on the first question, I’m already sorta thinking they won’t go far. It’s pretty much what Brig said all along, their game is so much less worth watching than before.

So yet again it’s ‘The Chronology Quiz You Don’t Know You’re Playing’.

Reasonable when the question style applies to scientific breakthroughs centuries apart. But asking someone to back half a million on knowing that Ozzy Osbourne got married (to someone at the time unknown) 25 days before – and in the same month as Charles and Diana.

What’s more – the host making the category decision at this crucial a stage AND the category choices being so ambiguous for the final question. ‘PEOPLE’. That could be a question about nearly ANYTHING. How can anyone be expected to make an informed choice based on that.

    What a joke.

Agreed that Davina was far too pushy in the last category choice – Fair enough on the earlier questions but pointless to be rushing them on the most crucial choice when they could have padded to make it last the remainder of the show by the time they got to Q8

I’m absolutely gutted for the couple – I thought they had a relatively easy set of questions, but they played them really well – I certainly wasn’t expecting anyone to go into question eight with more than £100k, so to go in with over £500k is very good indeed.

That’s going to take a while to get over. But I hope they do.

But to be honest, I’m a bit bored of it now.

I can see where you’re coming from. I felt the same with Duel, some shows had nothing being given away with others having little being won. I said back in 2008 that it’s a risky and potentially dangerous thing also being a primetime show viewers could be switching off. Which is why majority losing shows works best in daytime (Eggheads, The Chase, Divided, Golden Balls etc…) Always felt Duel should’ve been piloted as a daytime format.

If Endemol needs to tweak the format more and try to give something away then they should adapt the 1 Vs 100 bail on the final question. Have something like Davina offering the couple 10% (in this case tonight, £52,500) or if they are stetched, 5% (£26,250) or just £25,000. Then if they decide to accept the bail and the answer is right then it would make it one hell of a reality check/guilt trip.

The thing is, it’s a hard and fast rule that doesn’t scale well particularly. If they’re playing with £25,000, are you *really* going to accept a £1,250 bribe to walk away?

It is very unlikely people are going to get to the final with anywhere near that amount of money on the table.

You’re right but it could be the case with larger amounts.being in play. It might work if they have a limit to when the bail can be used e.g.10% if they have £200K or more. Contestants on 1 Vs 100 have bailed with four figure amounts and would not play for an extra £50K though.

This is just getting better everynight – it needed tonight’s game, and I bet C4 are relieved they didn’t win it. They’ve managed though to show it is winnable without anyone winning, but still need an actual winner by the end of the week – but I bet C4 will be hoping they’re playing for a lot less.

Deserves a second series though, and hopefully tonights ratings will stay above 2m as I can’t see many viewers turning off over the hour.

I think though a good question for the jackpot. IMO the first one the last couple had was far more unfair in comparison to previous first questions.

Re: categories. I think they should have a 30 second limit to decide, with the screen flashing between the two categories and if they don’t decide, whichever category is highlighted at the end is the question.

There will be no winner before Saturday, then the final pair will get a laughably easy stack to make sure there’s a win.

Also it was obvivous they would select a pair from those who applied this week to prove the point.

Wow, what a show tonight, absolutely gutted for the couple – that will certainly take some getting over! One of the worst moments in live tv, and they had played the game really well throughout to end up with such a large amount. I suppose that final question is always going to require you to know the facts of both answers to get it right, or most likely a lucky guess. I was thinking they probably knew each other in the 70s, but wasn’t sure whether they married then. I’d have probably done the same.

Anyway, it was enthralling TV, but the question is how are they really going to top that? It’s unlikely anyone will get to Q8 again, let alone with that amount of money. And somehow, after that (and I can’t believe I’m saying this), a 100k gamble would feel less exciting. So I’m kinda with Brig now.

Most of us would probably remember that Charles & Diana were married in 1981, but the point here is that the couple did not even give themselves the full minute to think about the answer – they said they did not know for sure, and then stopped the clock. If they had considered the ages of the children from both marriages (Princes William and Harry – mid to late 20s; Osbourne children early to mid 20s) it might have made them put the money on the other answer. I did feel desperately sorry for them – a lovely couple.

When you’re that close to winning £525k, you can sorta forgive them for the occasion getting to them. Besides, a 50:50 shot at over half a million isn’t something you’d turn down quite easily.

Me and my ol’man worked it out together on the final question. He knew the exact date for Charles and Diana’s wedding and I knew Ozzy and Sharon married around 1982-1983 as I was reading on Wiki the other night.
