The Eurovision Song Contest: Semi-final 1

By | May 25, 2010

esc2010-eurovision-logoFor whatever reason I’m not really feeling this this year, but please use this space to have a chat about it.

You can’t actually vote in this one if you’re in the UK. Lyrics on the red button. We can vote on Thursday’s one.

    3+2(+1).

The first verse demonstrates why most male pop singers are tenors. And I hate saying that because I’m not one.

    Shiny dresses!

The tenor who has the second verse sounds better to my ears, even with my prejudices against tenors.

I should like this more than I do, which means it’s not very good.

Belarus: Sickly sweet stage school (un)spectacular. I need some umami, stat.

    4/10.

Paddy gives a good entry warning for Belarus

The dresses nearly deserve a shiny warning, but it’s just the good side of shiney.

A box ticking multi-gender five piece + piano, I think. And as such nothing at all wrong with it but hard to get excited by it. Still, seems well enough performed to me.

…No. The butterfly gimick is still not enough to get excited by, pretty as it is. Though why don’t the guys get wings?

Ah, a good old Icelandic Eurodance thing. Iceland appear to be Sweden this year.

Iceland: Eurodance. I SHOULD love it, but it lacks that certain…je ne sai-NO ALEX, DON’T.

Last song of the night, apparently.

    Iceland

After a very DDR opening we get a disappointing first verse… Into a DDR chorus.

    Eurovision Ballad/DDR ballad hybrid, then.

Now I’ve grokked what it’s doing, it works actually. Not well enough to get excited by, but works.

Was that bit with a different beat a bridge or am I imagining things? (I think that’s music term for what Who fans call ‘a middle eight’)

It’s generic Eurodance with a twiddly digital effect in the chorus I swear I’ve heard on a game show theme before. Alex?

On merit a 6, but +1.25 for spectacularly defying the sexist use of sylph-like women in this genre. Ergo:

    ICELAND 7.25

It sounds like an electricy-version of the Millionaire theme thing that does something like that.

Just for fun, when the qualifying countries come in:

1 point if its in your (or our) top ten, 0.5 if its in your top ten due to being equal to things that should be in your top ten but having more than ten with that amount or more.

I’ve highlighted with bold and italic and stuff, so should be easy to keep track.

Right, 2 second reviews of the qualifiers:

    Spain: Weird.
    Norway: Ballad.
UK: No. Though the OST recording isn’t that bad.
    France: USA would love this.
Germany: Barring the weird accent I like this!

    So then…

Giz is 7.5/10 in tune with europe
Alex is 6/10 in tune with europe
David is 5/10 in tune with europe
Brig is 6/10 in tune with europe
The Bar Metamind is 5/10 in tune with Europe

I should note that scoring everything identically would get you 5/10 in tune with Europe here.

I’m surprisingly in tune with Brig here. Only about 0.05 off with standard deviation, and exactly the same number of hits.
