Board of Excitement 23rd-29th May 2010

By | May 23, 2010

Enjoy this whilst it lasts, there might not be anything on next week’s…

  • The Chase (5pm, Weekdays, ITV1) – A new run for let’s be honest, ITV’s answer to Eggheads. The first series was mildly entertaining, I wonder if they’ve ironed out the creases for this second, longer run.
  • Come Dine With Me (9pm, Monday, C4) – the gameshow hosts special featuring Pat Sharp, Jenny Powell, Anthea Redfern and crazy uncle Michael Barrymore.
  • The Million Pound Drop – Live! (10pm, Monday – Friday, 9:30pm Saturday, Channel 4) – the lovely Davina’s back with contestants trying to avoid dropping money through holes. And you’ll be able to play along live on the internet! I’ve been a bit down on the theory of this show, but I am gettiong more excited the closer it gets, so we’ll see.
  • It’s only the bloody Eurovision Song Contest! (Right, pay attention: Semi-finals are Tuesday and Thursday, 8pm on BBC3, the grand final is 8pm on Saturday on BBC1 and BBCHD) – I’ve not been following this at all this year, so all the songs are going to be a surprise to me, except for the UK entry sung by Josh Dubovie which let’s be honest, probably won’t even be getting any points from Ireland this year. Live from Oslo, the semi-finals will have commentary from Paddy O’Connell and Sarah Sawood, Saturday’s grand final will be commentated by Graham Norton who if he is as good as last year will be very good indeed.

    Last night.

Over The Rainbow Final: 5.6m (34%)
In It To Win It 2012: 5.3m (28.5%)
Over The Rainbow Final Results Show: 6.4m (29%)
The Whole 19 Hundred Thousand Viewers: 1.9m (14.0%)

Vernon Kay got DESTROYED by The Doctor last night and produced the lowest rating for a new ITV primetime game show for a very long time. With two weeks remaining, they better improve or Ratings Bear might be tucking into a feast come the summer bank holiday to make up for his vomiting of Ant & Dec.

Jose Mourinho might be The Special One but he also got DESTROYED by The Phantom/The Winton coalition. An excellent result for The Phantom plus praise to The Winton by pulling excellent figures and proves it can perform well against the warm weather and when Prime Minister Simon Cowell is not present.

Warm weather and no British representation (apart from the referee) in the Champions Leauge final, so I suspect ITV’s expectations of a good audience were already low – but 1.9 million for TW19Y- and a good set of figures last night from the neighbours down at No 1?

      Ouch.

Note though that Doctor Who was down to it’s lowest audience in decades with just 4.2m, compared to the usual 6m+ – so the Whole 19 Yards was defeated by the weather, not the Doctor. Amazed though Over the Rainbow held up.

“All the songs are going to be a surprise to me, except for the UK entry.”

Well you did hear that Niamh Kavanagh is representing Ireland, didn’t you, Brig?

Though it’s probably highly unlikely that she’ll repeat her success of 17 years ago. Would definitely be a shame, however, if she didn’t make the final.

Any other year, she’d have a real shot at winning. But seeing how everyone’s doing ballads…

Also borderline, but I’ve noticed that World’s Strongest Man 2009 (in Malta this year) is on Virgin1 now. Also DIN is becoming the new Eurostile.

But there is no ‘play for fun’ option. You have to be a Bet365 customer to play..

Popular UK-based torrent site (rhymes with Pavlova) has a megapack of the first three seasons of Only Connect, if anyone’s interested.

That is not a good rating for the ‘Over The Rainbow’ final. It topped that earlier in the series – and I think the ‘Oliver’ series rated slightly better in it’s final.

Quite a shame. It’s a much better show this series. The staging of the final was fantastic.

Looking forward to The Chase. Hoping they’ve tweaked the set a bit.

Actually I’m wrong – it’s previous peak was 5.7 – which I think is even more worrying.

However, as discussed earlier, television viewing full stop was badly hit by the fact that everybody wanted to be outside instead. Even Doctor Who only got 4.2m!

The 34% audience share is much more important here.

Don’t love that, if only ten people are watching but I get 100% share, I’m not actually going to be too thrilled.

Lots of things working against W19Y – earlier timeslot, no Britain’s Got Talent, hot weather, but some of its own making as well – I can’t quite believe there are only eight different challenges across the whole series (and, as an aside, if you’re going to have four male contestants such as they, surely you want to be playing Twin Peaks as the most physically demanding game? Although it was nice to see the velcro-y Stick ’em Up or whatever it was called not seem like quite such a damp squib like last time). I was under the impression there were only going to be six episodes, so to find out there’s eight was a bit of a surprise.
