Hearing from our chums Reality TV Warriors that Wie is De Mol? has been to China for its 2020 series, and that the cast list will be out soon.
WIDM has become a bit of an appetizer to Belgian De Mol‘s main course over the last few years, but at its best it’s a like a Michelin starred one. We shall look forward to covering it in the New Year when it goes out.
Hopefully it’s a bit better than last year, which wasn’t awful by any means but it was missing that last little bit of creativity.
I’ll definitely be doing The Suspect List for 2020 – but what are your thoughts? Should I do it for Dutch WIDM or Belgian Mole? What would you prefer?
Yes. (Both)
Is this so you can be screwed over by the bonus question twice? I’m all for that.
Oh 100%. I think it’ll be less fun if I ever actually win one.
Wonder if there are any Chinese subtitlers out there, as about the only chinese I understand is sweet and sour chicken on a Saturday night
Obviously the series will still mostly be in Dutch, this is about the Dutch version going over there to film a series rather than a new Chinese version. Any parts of dialogue in Chinese will be subtitled I’m the original broadcast anyway.
D’oh I’m an idiot, I spent all day thinking China was knocking out their own series of the mole rather than WIDM visiting there for their series!
Hopefully WIDM & DE MOL will both get subbed again as much as I love the more probable my favourite reality TV game show I just wouldn’t watch without subs
Well I have every intention of subbing again 😉
Hurrah!
Delighted to hear it!
De Mol is the one I’m nervous of, I don’t know if there’s been any talk in the subbing community about someone taking up the mantle.
I’m still holding out a bit of hope that Natalia can find time (even if it’s just to provide the SRT files).
The main issue for her is that there are no Dutch subs to work off like I have. With those it takes about 3 hours per episode. Without that it goes up to 8 hours. I don’t blame her for letting it go. It’s also super annoying for her since she faces massive copyright issues.
If there was an easier way I’d love to take it over from her but I’ve also talked to her about it and she even discouraged me and told me not to do the Belgian version.
It’s a real shame Vier are so trigger happy! I mentioned it to everyone at the finale to try and get it to stop happening, so I’ve still got a bit of hope they’ll be nicer this year.
Random thought: if someone somehow has the .srt files for the 2 copyright-struck series, I found an upload of it without the subtitles, maybe it could sorted out and put together.
Brandon: Are you talking the ThatDarkSpark era ones? I believe I figured out a way to extract the .SRT files from Youtube even with the copyright block in place, I can see if I still have them.
I want to join you guys for this season. I’m super excited!!!!
China was definitely the least exciting of the speculated options (there were rumours of Nepal and New Zealand, among others), but I don’t mind it. Especially considering it sounds like they’ll be doing what they did with the US season and sticking to one of the lesser-known provinces rather than doing, like, Beijing/Shanghai/Sichuan.
Gary Rhodes dies suddenly, and then it’s announced that Clive James has died too. Shit.
Of course, Clive was far better known for introducing clips of Japanese game shows than he was for presenting British ones. Mind you, he was also a University Challenge contestant.
New cooking show coming to quibi (a streaming service launching in 2020) called biggest little cook off, hosted by Andy samberg of all people.

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone here talking about this yet, so I figured I’d bring it to your attention.

Sad news.
However a quick glance at the show suggests it’s “just” Chinese Million Dollar Mile which is a sporty show but nothing outlandish, which suggests unfortunate situation (like what has happened with footballers sometimes) rather than the end of reality television.
Yeah, it’s not because the format was particularly extreme or anything, not particularly anyone’s fault.
It has been reported today that the Belgian version is going to be in Greece, making this the first series of the revival to be set in Europe.
Yep, they released a trailer for a Vier show last night called “Lion Meets Legend”, but it starts a not very hidden Gilles as the main character and the title is an anagram of “De Mol Griekenland”.
Oh that’s interesting. I wonder how often they were spotted by Belgian tourists, and if it was a first choice location?
I do wonder if Lion Meets Legend was the cover title and they said Gilles was filming a documentary. It’d make sense given they filmed a month earlier than normal.
As Gilles explained before, part of the reason they avoid filming in Europe is to make it less likely that he’s spotted by Belgians. When it’s him on his own they can easily say it’s a documentary, but when he’s also with the contestants and a Belgian tourist spots them, how do the producers handle that?
From speaking to Gilles, I think they basically just ask people not to blab and ruin the show for anyone else. Honour amongst thieves. So far, it’s worked.
