May as well do my usual Who Dares Wins recap.
Alex and Liz returned to face Laura – who looked ever so slightly like a cross between Judy Finnigan and Bet Lynch – and Peter, and there was more gesturing ahead of the first list. Neither pair had the greatest knowledge of Meryl Streep films, as demonstrated by the low bidding, but it was L & P who suffered most, as they got in and fell two short when they said “Proof” instead of “Doubt”.
A & L knew the most obvious countries with green in their national flag, but had they not seen the Cuban one recently?
That meant a tiebreak list, on Agatha Christie detective novels, and Laura and Peter had “The Mirror Crack’d” harshly, but perhaps fairly, disallowed, as it was the exact titles of the novels that were required. But, as was the case a few weeks back with a similar list on Roald Dahl’s works, the reigning champs responded with a wrong answer of their own, and the challengers took full advantage. In this case, Alex and Liz had clearly run out of ideas and were rather chancing their arm with the likes of “Murder at the Hotel”.
So L & P took the crown, and their knowledge of official languages of the EU earned them a cool £15k. And, as Nick pointed out, they stopped at just the right time, as Norway isn’t a member state.
But, once again, a reign was to prove short. On came a couple of students – and I can’t help but ask, have 12 Yard developed a preference for man-lady pairings, as there’s been a shedload of them this series? Anyway, Peter’s bids for the first list were, in all fairness, ambitiously high – he certainly knew his painters, but it’s not so easy trying to name those responsible for the world’s 100 greatest paintings.
Then the students said they could name 24 of the 42 Scottish Football League teams from last season – and did just that, outdoing Christian and Rob’s 23 countries of Asia earlier in the series. Good answers along the way included Annan Athletic, Forfar Athletic and Ayr United.
Interestingly, Laura and Peter finished with one win less than Alex and Liz, and also Margaret and Jon, but won £5k more than each of these pairs. Although of course, unlike them, they didn’t lose £5k on a money list by getting three right and then giving a wrong answer.
And nor did the students, as they named three UK-born Oscar winners for Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor or Supporting Actress before playing safe. They wouldn’t have lost £5k anyway as they would have doubled it had they gone on, but this too was a bit of a dicey list.
