Shows that could be bought back

By | November 20, 2018

Good news everyone! They’re bringing Blockbusters back! It has been about three weeks since the last revival after all, only now they’re asking for students who clearly won’t have been around when the original was on and therefore has no cultural cache. Still it’s lucky that shows are an hour long these days, seeing the paroxyisms of laughter “Can I have a P please?” got every single time on the Challenge revival goodness knows how eye-watering an event it will be everytime in 2019 and both contestants and audiences at home will require five minutes to just catch their breath each time it happens. It’s a reference that ages like a fine wine, look:

It’s just science. I look forward to them keeping it £5 a question as well.

Anyway, someone (TheWestonator89, who has a lot of good stuff on his channel) uploaded most of an episode of Dale Winton’s The Other Half on Youtube the other day and it struck me that there’s no real reason it couldn’t work today, indeed with reality TV being as it is everyone snogging everyone else seems pretty normal. Great theme tune as well.

I’ve always thought that 3-2-1 would make a great Saturday or Sunday night shiny floor variety show with proper superstars from pop, comedy, film and musical theatre doing the turns.

Would probably make a good replacement for Saturday Night Takeaway actually, hadn’t thought of that.

I’ve been wanting them to get a presenting gig together outside of the likes of charity telethons; I think they’ve got an easy rapport – you’d hope that really, given their relationship! – that I don’t think we’ve really seen in a presenting duo since, well, Ant and Dec.

I think I’ve mentioned this a few times before, but in my dream future they’re hosting a revival of Friends Like These.

They absolutely should host a comeback of Friends Like These, as it really needs a duo hosting and I can’t think of any other current ones now that Ant and Dec are out of the question for now.

Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig should definitely be used together out of Bake Off!

I saw The Other Half and think it would work very well with seniors. Not necessarily as players, but as the couples to be matched. Old people can be funny as hell (apparently a reason why The Voice senior works well in the Netherlands) and there is a bit more anecdotes to get from them than from some youngsters. You could probably accompany a version of The Voice senior with an episode The Other Half on right afterwards, now that I’m thinking about it…

Duel was basically player vs player Million Pound Drop, but 10 times better. It’s a shame it didn’t get a better host than Nick Hancock.

Got a couple of ideas for a couple of show revivals.

One is the cbbc show best of friends, when i was watching it when i was in one of my nostalgic days, one of the themes that stood out was how mature they treated the kids, they asked tricky questions regarding any decisions they had to make that some prime time gameshow don’t dare to ask. Could be more relevant nowadays with the friend list on facebook and see how loyal, they are in real life, since you could say you’re loyal online but not mean it. Plus the show was quite good

Another one is the bubble, isolate 3 celebrites for a week or so, first thing they do is guess whether the news that came out during the week is real or fake, again more relevant nowadays with fake news. Ahead of it’s time but could become a smash hit nowadays.

The Bubble was probably too hard to make, it’s a lot of effort to keep the celebrities isolated for a few days, just for a short show.

Noel Edmonds has been photographed in Australia, looks like he’s definitely going in!

The late entries usually go in on day 5, which is Thursday.

Mastermind launching in Australia in a stripped 6pm slot on SBS (think that’s the old Countdown(under) slot).
