Fun Thing Sent to me on Twitter Tuesday. Actually it’s Wednesday isn’t it? Bloody bank holidays.

Tom Scott off of Treasure Hunt sent me a link to a part of a show of his, The Technical Difficulties, called The Battle of the Beer. If nothing else, it’s very well produced, but lucky it is something else, and that something else is being quite fun.

Cheers Brig! It’s no Accumulate!, but still…

(Also, I fully expect to get taken to task for at least one of the questions not being properly researched.)

No it’d be a round of a show, like it is a segment of your programme. The performances of host and announcer are confident. I also quite liked some of the other items of your show (the Virtual Reality race and trying to get Toast a date). So well done.

So what kind of ‘distractor’ pictures was Vicky Coren holding up just off camera when Tom and his team were tackling the Only Connect Semi-Final wall, I wonder..?

    (sorry)

The funniest thing was “How long before they fire the sound engineer…?”

It’s a good show. I do think the giggling could do with toning down a bit, if it’s intended to be a proper format.

Like Brig says, it’s just a section, not a full format! – they’re all regulars, and the quiz is more an excuse for us to prat around a bit.

(Matt’s done sterling work on the sound, actually – my microphone died half way through the introduction and we couldn’t reshoot, so what you’re hearing is a thousand times better than the original…)

I guessed you couldn’t reshoot the quiz because the reaction wouldn’t be the same twice, but didn’t it continue for the rest of the show like that.

And is this primarily a stage(?) show filmed for the wider benefit, or a Youtube project that happens to have an audience?

When you’ve got a support crew of two and a budget close to zero, these things happen…

And it’s a YouTube project – we did university radio for five years, we figured we may as well try our hand at this as well. If it goes any further, great; if not, we had a lot of fun making it!

Are you just hoping for word of mouth or are you sending surreptitious emails to various TV prod cos?

I’m as anti-wacky student rubbish as the next person who works for a university without actually having gone to a university, so I was happy to see that the feature content was inventive and nicely produced and quite funny.

You could have pitched the first episode as ‘Basically it’s Top Gear for nerds’ and Channel 4 might have snapped you up sometime ago. A cable channel like Bravo still might! Exciting times.

That was the niche I thought it was aiming for as well – Top Gear without the car bits. And that could indeed be a very successful niche to aim for.

The opening couple of sentences is almost a direct lift – it’s a very confident way to open a show and I like it.

It can’t hurt to try! If you happen to know anyone who might me interested, let me know…

(Also, it wasn’t a deliberate lift from Top Gear…!)

Ha ha, no offence meant, but sometimes J Clarkson will introduce the first feature with a sort of crash opening like that.

Two very enthusiastic thumbs up; you’re all clearly having loads of fun, and the result is – oddly enough, exaclty as Brig says – very funny, even staying on the right side of my “not my cup of tea”-o-meter. Am very tempted to look at the rest of the show when I’m not about to go on shift.

I can’t read, it’s around 500. Got the spread the word about this, it’s brilliant.

Watched the full episodes rather than the clip, very funny.
