Dr Gameshow

By | November 1, 2017

Possibly of interest (although not possibly to everybody’s taste), Earwolf has just launched a podcast called Dr Gameshow, which sounds like it started out as a local radio show in New York and has found a new home under a specialist podcast wing.

In it, comics Jo Firestone and Manolo Moreno are joined by improv comics (of varying levels of fame) and call-in guests to play largely silly games submitted by listeners in order to win a custom magnet. I’ve only listened to episode one thus far, but it was loose and silly and quite funny – the antithesis of NPR’s Ask Me Another’s smugness really.

It seems to come out twice a week at an hour a go, you can subscribe in your podcast player of choice or you can listen on the website. It started only last week.

I’ve also started listening to Pappy’s Flatshare Slamdown, a mere six years after it first started. It’s alright.

Ep two. Him tweeting about it alerted me to it! Didn’t realise he has his own Earwolf podcast. Some sort of chatshow in a fantasy pub.

I find the workrate of US podcasts incredible. I quite enjoyed watching Comedy Bang Bang on Netflix, it seems like the podcast when I was trying it out is 90 minutes several times a week! Crikey, I only tend to get about six – seven hours a week travel time. Had to drop it pretty quickly.

Just for the record, a self-aggrandizing list of podcasts I’m subscribed to in no particular order:

    Planet Money – popular economics
TV Cream – not so much for the films, but absolutely love What We’ve Just Watched.
    Chris Moyles
Scummy Mummies (feat. Ellie Gibson from Go 8 Bit)
Eurogamer, although they’ve been quiet recently.
    This American Life
    FighTING Talk
    Adam Buxton
    Shut Up and Sit Down
    Graham Norton
Reality TV Warriors – starring TV’s Michael Harmstone
    Pappy’s Flatshare Slamdown
    Dr Gameshow

So quite a lot, although they’re not on all the time.

On the gameshowy front, of late I’ve been listening to a lot of The Incomparable Game Show Podcast. It’s not a single format; and the most successful ones have returned multiple times, while others have only appeared once or twice. There’s a definite tendency towards playing versions of old game shows, too, with Password, Match Game and Family Feud having appeared, along with their own regular quiz about geeky media, and what began as a straight play of Balderdash that evolved into something a bit more varied.

There’s a lot there; it’s not all successful (Counterclockwise doesn’t work too well unless it’s for a franchise that appeals to you; I *think* Pundit Showdown is trying to be tech-talk Fighting Talk but it doesn’t quite work for me), but there’s enough variety that I tend to find something enjoyable coming up after any episode that didn’t land with me.
