Clocks

By | August 21, 2017

Haven’t had a post for a few days, er nothing interesting’s happening until later in the week er, what’s topical? The eclipse? Nothing relevant. Big Ben shutting down? Ah! Well in that case here’s an episode of little remembered kids quiz Clockwise with Charlotte Hindle, featuring an end game with Big Ben. Sort of.

This was then reversioned, gunged-up and given to Darren Day as a Double Dare replacement on Going Live. He’s hosting it an octave higher that you’d normally expect here.

We’ll probably have a Show Discussion post up for The Crystal Maze for Wednesday if O2 are doing their previews again. There’s a preview video of fails on DS right now.

Did anyone watch Streetmate on C4? I thought it was pretty good, the format was identical to the original and Scarlett was a decent host.

Incidentally in that Clockwise episode, the green team’s 45 seconds is actually almost a minute. SCANDAL.

That’s quite interesting considering how much his baby Cash Trapped is, and as much as I enjoy it it’s still an iteration away from proper greatness and Brad does carry it a little bit. It will almost certainly be returning on current figures – 2.1m if it’s a bit grey out, 1.8 if sunny, mlst successful summer show since Tipping Point.

Mulhern would be the obvious next host for Cash Trapped (or Davina), but I can see Sean Fletcher (Rebound) picking it up.

I think Mulhern or Davina would be a great fit for Cash Trapped – although the problem with the show is its only worth tuning in for the escape round – I’ve been just skipping the show each day to watch the last bit. I hope Sean Fletcher isn’t given any other quiz shows to present – I thought he was dreadful on rebound. Grimacing when they won, smiling when they lost – he didn’t seem to know what tone to adapt at what time!

It probably won’t be Davina, too associated with C4 and the upcoming 100K Drop.

Mulhern would be OK but not brilliant. Walsh is one of few hosts these days who is a) technically excellent (most of the time) b) has a twinkle in his eye yet c) is believably authoritative and you really need all three to be ticked to convincingly front Cash Trapped I think. Mulhern is a utility host who absolutely satisfies A and B but has always struggled with C. Blame his youthful demeanour if you want.

Is there a new dynamic in these?

Anne: “The kids are likely to be fast on the buzzer and know their pop culture. The dads know the classic quiz stuff, but can be out buzzed by their children jumping in to pass! Mums and nans are the ones being cautious about the offers: ‘Don’t go high!’”

Does this imply that the contestants not taking part can change the question if they don’t think their teammate will know the answer?

Sounds more like the kids buzzing in early to throw the question out during the final chase.

Have there always been adapted formats included? I thought it was about original content and was surprised about The French Wall.
And surprised Grace Kelly-singer Mika has a personality show on Italian TV. He paved the way for my love for pop music back then and I’m really glad he’s such a huge star in Italy and France apparently.

      I don’t think I’ve ever been less enthusiastic by a line-up.

I think it’s between The Wall and Bigheads. The Wall is the better show, but seeing as it’s judged on an episodic basis if you only watched one episode of Bigheads you’d think it pretty good.

Interesting to see the recently mentioned Lost in Time nommes in the VR category.

Don’t forget they’ll be the adjudged the best of shows that companies have actually paid to put in for, and they’re getting judged on an episode.

My gut is saying that even though The Wall stands up better to repeat viewing, everyone quite liked episode one of Bigheads before getting bored of it, and it’s precisely the sort of concept that tends to do well with the judges.

Hat tip @danielmarkhurst for spotting it, Dave’s moved Taskmaster to Wednesday 13th September, presumably to avoid a clash with the end of GBBO.

Some information on the format of ‘The Button’, the new BBC One game show from Alex Horne & Andy Devonshire (the great folks behind Taskmaster).

Kate Phillips, head of BBC Entertainment, talked about the premise at the TV Festival in Edinburgh today.

Five families have a large button in their home (no studio as far as I’m aware), which can flash at any time during the day.
Once the button starts flashing, they must push the button to start the game.
They’ll face a series of silly challenges, which they must complete.
When they’ve completed the game, they have to push the button once again.
Their scored for their performance in the games, and their up against the other families.

There’s also a press release for it now.

“The 8 x 30 minute game show, which can arrive in any home around the country, will visit five families or friends each week and place a talking button at the heart of their front room where the teams face spontaneous challenges against the clock to win a cash prize.

The teams must keep a beady eye on the button which turns from green to red when it’s time to play. They miss it at their peril as it’s a race against the clock to hit the button and start the game. The Button delivers the task they must complete in the quickest time, interacts with them, and also reveals their rival teams on screen and the results.”

Seems very similar to Ant & Dec’s Push the Button, which I quite enjoyed but didn’t do very well.

I… don’t really see it. Well, except for the inclusion of a button.

Feels more to me like a Noel’s House Party / Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush tone, although (presumably) without the live element.

I’ve been tidying up and have not one but TWO copies of the Interceptor theme music single to give away. Both in great condition on the outside; the records themselves have been played a few times and might have a few crackles and pops on them, but I can’t play them to check because I’m not a hipster with a turntable.

In 1989, these cost me the princely sum of £1.75. Today, I’m happy to give them away to a good home to the first two people who’d like one, although a few quid via PayPal to cover P&P would be appreciated. Email david (at) qwertyuiop (dot) co (dot) uk for deets.

…and if you have a digital copy of the theme already, don’t forget that the record has an exclusive B side: the Interceptor Boogie!

It was nice to see Who Dares Wins pop up after another month or so break, really does look like the BBC will be giving it the same treatment as In It To Win It after the current run.

Bet the editing suite were in a bit of a panic with the bids for the first couple of lists! (one of which a potential WDW record breaker). How do they ‘decide’ which lists to get the contestants to play? I presume it isn’t random, they certainly seemed to chuck in a couple of much shorter lists tonight to make up the time a bit.

Could it be justifiably suggested at this stage that the Beeb were prepared to drop *all* their Lottery game shows when they stopped televising the draws, only to grant WDW a reprieve when they saw how popular it was?

Oh, well – que sera sera. Assuming that the current run is indeed the last, will it go on long enough for the show to qualify for the Long-Running category on UKGS? (At present it’s less than three months away from doing so…)

Yeah, a couple of really big spoilers at the end there, well done everybody.

‘New Look’ is a bit overstated.
