Bother’s Bar Does Что? Где? Когда? – Episode 4

By | April 29, 2017

Once again it’s time to put your lateral thinking quiz heads on with another game of What? Where? When?, the show where viewers send in their questions to try and stump the panel. It’s 2-1 to the panel so far, who will win today?

If you have an idea for a question then send it in to David and it might feature in a future episode. Don’t know when the next one is going to be as the next few weeks are quite busy, but hopefully soon.

I’m quite enjoying this series, and I was very pleased with how quickly I got question five in this one.

A few points of interest/controversy from tonight’s Who Dares Wins:

In a round on Oscar winners, “Dancing With Wolves” for “Dances With Wolves” was disallowed – no problem there, but Nick reminded us that contestants are briefed on being accurate with titles. However, later when Sam Quek was given as an answer to a question on Rio 2016 Medal Winners (having already been given as a correct answer to a different question, earlier) a pronunciation of “Sam Quick” was allowed to stand. (They also allowed a muddled pronunciation of Amundsen, the explorer, a few weeks ago). So it seems that you have to be word-for-word right on titles (as it should be) but if you’re “close enough” on names you can get away with it!

Secondly, one of the questions was “I’m A Celebrity… Stars” which was defined as being “anyone who’d appeared on UK IAC according to the IMDB Pro website.” However, this meant that as well as the contestants and Ant and Dec (fair enough) it also included literally ANYONE who’d ever appeared in any tiny segment of the show. I.e. you could have said (if you’d known their names) Gillian McKeath’s children or Gino D’Acampo’s wife, for example! Or any celebrities who’d made just a guest appearance, maybe in a challenge, despite never being a contestant – for example, Holly Willoughby or Harry Hill, apparently! Seemed a bit silly when they could have easily just verified a list of anyone who’s ever been a contestant!

Clearly this didn’t affect the game, however, they then moved from that “too comprehensive” list to one which was arguably “not comprehensive enough.” In the last couple of series a number of questions seem to have become “A Very Broad Category” followed by a fairly “unofficial” source to verify it, hoping that the source was “comprehensive enough” to cover anything that the contestants could think of. In previous weeks we had “Cheeses” with the source being one specific cheese guide which listed lots and lots of cheeses for e.g.

Tonight’s such category was the first game tiebreaker and was “Castles” which was defined to be “any of the 350 British castles listed in the sixth edition of the book A to Z of Almost Everything.” This came unstuck when the champions submitted Culzean Castle: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culzean_Castle

However, despite seemingly being known as a castle and similar in style to one or two others on the list, they were told that it was wrong because it didn’t happen to be included in the list in the A to Z of Almost Everything (a list of “true castles” according to the clarification, whatever that means) so they lost the game and their champions position.

You clearly need a source, but surely we can have questions which don’t require such “random” sources! They’ve been doing it for a few series and for the first time it seems to have bitten back.

The A to Z of Almost Everything is compiled by Trevor Montague, for the record.

Yes, I’m sure there is pedigree behind the sources they choose, it’s using a list of such an indistinct nature which I think is a bit debatable – whoever’s source they choose it’s not a hard and fast list of answers.

Crime Scene 3 Ep1 has now been subbed by ODK, and seems to work well enough via Opera. Haven’t yet figured out if there’s a way to download the video.
