The Nintendo Switch is out today, so let’s jump back 34 years to computer technology of 1983 with RTE’s Murphy’s Micro Quiz-m (no, not a clue what the -m is all about), kind of a proto First Class meets Ask the Family, but with quite good prizes and buzzer noises. Thanks to David for the heads-up.
I think the title’s an adaptation of Murphy’s microcosm, but I haven’t been able to find out what one of them is.
I assumed it was a play on Micro-schism?
I thought that, but Googling “Murphy’s microschism” gave no results and I was able to find the phrase “Murphy’s microcosm” in books, though I wasn’t able to find what it meant by it.
I just assumed it was meant to be a general pun on “microcosm”. For whatever reason.
I haved asked on Twitter if there’s an official answer.
Anyway my favourite bit is Mike Murphy gamely commentating on “Killer Gorilla”.
And the answer, courtesy of @Mark6R on Twitter:
“I remember Mike Murphy being interviewed on the radio last year, he was asked and he had no idea what the -m stood for. Ah well.”
Maybe a weird spelling of quiz ’em?
Pun on Microcosm. Not that difficult…!
