It is Schlag den Raab on Saturday.

By | April 10, 2012

Unbelieveably there are no videos of hit game Tischedecke on Youtube. Anyway, there’s €1.5m up for grabs, Saturday at 7:15 UK time.

In other news, here’s that Blockbusters trailer:

Since I can’t seem to find an explanation of what this is on a quick look through the tagged posts, anybody mind telling me the details of Schlag den Raab and why you all get so excited about it?

If it’s what I’m imagining it is based on previous comments, it’s “play luck based games to win Herr Raab’s money” – which makes me wonder why that’s so praised and anticipated, yet “play luck based games to win Mr Cowell’s money” was universally panned…

No! They’re not luck based games, they’re all almost entirely skill and knowledge based, but usually pitched towards the unusual end and so there’s a constant “what are they going to throw at them next?” sort of feeling.

Did you watch Beat the Star? It’s the original version of that, except it’s 15 games, completely live and has €millions riding on it. It goes on a bit though, but watching one frame of pool with €3m riding on it was exhilarating.

Stefan Raab is basically Germany’s answer to Simon Cowell, Jonathan Ross and Bruce Forsyth in one package, and he’s properly competitive as well. He puts on loads of big events for Pro 7 backed by his very successful TV Total chat show.

And even with the hour start we have on Germany, timewise – sometimes the show even finishes transmission on the same day that it started..

Actually, even with no grasp of German, the show and games are fantastically easy to pick up and watch (have the bar open in another window as there are some patrons who know what is going to happen) and you do get drawn in. Arrive around 8. The first 45 mins is choosing the contestant to play against ‘Das Raab’.

SdR is a fine gameshow. The Uk version was needlessly dropped by ITV, so they could make ‘The Whole 12 Yards’ instead.(slaps forehead in mock disgust)

It wasn’t needlessly dropped. It was really expensive for what it was, and sadly even though it was a good show they couldn’t justify keeping it around.

Anyway, would you REALLY want to see a third series of every game being Broken Ladder?

quite. what it was was needlessly expensive and not diverse enough. they’d have done better to do the same as they’d done in the first series and fly everyone over the germany, must have been cheaper.

Ok point taken, but you watch some of the games played on Schlag Den Raab/Star – and they are so cheap, probably cost less than 50 euros to buy the props needed to play them – it seems that Diverse/Gallowgate were left to get on with it for series two of Beat The Star.

Maybe if there had been a co-exec producer from Raab tv flying over from Cologne for some of the pre-production meetings with a few past game examples, things may have been different.

Anyway, I still maintain the thought that the staircase from Beat The Star is now finding work on the set of Dancing On Ice…

There are three new promotions for Blockbusters on the Challenge website; including some footage of the Gold Run game board… and Hulk Hogan.
