Absolute Zero

By | November 23, 2011

OK, new show films at BBC Television Centre on 1st December, which I would absolutely LOVE to go to but regrettably have other engagements.

We think this is Reflex that was being bandied around a few months ago (although we can’t be completely sure), which sounds a bit like it’s going to be The Cube but not in The Cube by Objective, the makers of The Cube. Emphasis on super slo-mo camera shots. Rory Bremner is hosting, which is a leftfield choice but we’ll see.

As I said, I can’t go which is a proper tragedy (and naturally it would be hilarious if it turned out to be something completely different) but if you do I am very interested to hear what you think.

Edit: I’m very wrong about this, it’s an estimated guess quiz.

Well, we kind of already knew Holly was going to host it… 🙄 😉

Would I be right in thinking that this’ll be her first Beeb show?

She did some Fame Academy related thing a few years ago, and some stuff for CBBC.

It used to be Experimental and used to be rather good. How the mighty have fallen and that.

And for comparison, the hosts of the Irish version will be Winning Streak presenter Kathryn Thomas and actor Eoghan McDermott.

I am loathe to make a prediction as to how well The Voice UK will do having been very wrong about the US show. I don’t think being on the BBC helps it – it is difficult to be cool (basically a commercial construct, let’s not forget) when it comes from an authoritative middle-class perspective which is possibly why its Webber shows and Strictly Come Dancing have done quite well but Fame Academy and So You Think You Can Dance? not so.

I’ve just been hilariously told The Voice producers have asked for photos of all potential contestants. Irony!

As we know. The BBC also have a poor track record with imported shows. I think only The Apprentice has done any justice for the Beeb. Even outlasting the original US/NBC version.

The Apprentice has been going for over seven years and there is no sign of the show slowing down. The Apprentice can get 8 million viewers. Something The Voice has to get in order to get the most out of their price for picking up the rights.

Total Wipeout does what it does best and get the viewers in an early evening slot but I feel the show is getting tired as they don’t rotate the second and third rounds. Series 2 had it spot on as they rotate Dizzy Dummies with The Dreadmill but it wasn’t the case in series 3 (Dreadmill was used once) and 4. That said, I will give the show credit as they haven’t done what the US version has done and made the course impossible to beat. The course in Argentine might be hard but it is beatable.

Surprise! It’s actually the sequel to Sub-Zero. It’s very similar except a whole lot cooler.

I can exclusively reveal Who Wants To Be a Millionaire is having a New Year’s special. But it’s no longer live. It’s pre-recorded on Sunday 18th Dec!

Have the live shows been scrapped, you may ask? Well, it does look like it.

You can’t claim exclusively when I’ve posted the same news on twitter literally minutes ago. You’ve simply read my tweet and posted the news on here. In other words. You’re poking your nose and claiming the credit.

      Actually you’re wrong (once again!).

The Christmas Celebrity special will air LIVE on Monday 19th December. It has been reported it will be shown from 8.30pm until 10pm. Unless the schedule changes, it will run a full 90 minutes. In my opinion the live shows should run for 90 minutes and not the usual 75.

There will also be a New Year Celebrity special but it looks like they will be recording that show 24 hours before on Sunday 18th December. This could mean they might air the show on either New Years Eve or New Years Day.

      Proper journalism, there.

I stand corrected. How comes the Remembrance November special wasn’t live? Its weird theyve got some live episodes and some not live episodes this year. I thought the plan was to have live episodes all the time?

That one I cannot work out. It could be because if it was advertised live, viewers might feel short changed when they tune in to find out they cannot win anything. There is also the possibility with the audience were Armed Forces only they might no choice but to record the show because some might be on duty.

It could also be down to their contract that they can produce so many live shows and so many recorded shows. It might’ve been recorded but it got a respectable 4.6 million. Over 1 million more it usually gets with normal contestants.

Someone might have a better and official answer than me but I cannot give you an official answer. Sorry.

            Thanks for the comprehensive reply.

I like you Travis, you’re a very knowledgable fella. You should be working in TV with all your expertise.

          2. Travis P

Thanks for the compliment. I suspect you probably have got something in Media Studies or something similar. Which is why you manage to work for Endemol. Unfortunately, I never did any Media Studies stuff in my youth.

          3. David B

Can I underline that Media Studies is absolutely not necessary to get a job in the media. I, for one, didn’t have one (Maths grad) and neither did my producer (Theology grad). Some kind of volunteering experience (e.g. working in student radio) or industry awareness (such as your writing for Buzzerblog) would show much more initiative than sitting in a chair for three years and just being fed stuff.

Because they absolutely inundated with applications, producers are usually very good at finding out who have real talent, awareness and initiative at a job they want to do, and rejecting the majority who think that falling into the media is merely a cool way to earn a crust.

Just to reiterate what David said, I came from a background of customer services into ITV. Our managers have always been clear with us that when they recruit they look to maintain and increase the diversity of skills in the department.

It’s also worth remembering that once you have a job at a media company, be that receptionist, HR, IT or Broadcast Resources like me. You have access to all the internal schemes like shadowing and secondments to help you get into the job you really want.

Confirmed through the press office, 8.30pm til 10pm. I’m expecting the New Years Special to air on New Years Day.

I have to think this has been known about and I simply missed hearing about it as always, but Mythbusters just had a segment about the Monty Hall Problem.
