The new series of Schlag den Star begins tonight (7:15 UK time) on Pro Sieben.
It’s basically the same as Schlag den Raab except it’s smaller stakes, nine games and the contestant can call upon Stefan Raab to play for them once. And obviously it’s against a celebrity, and much shorter.
Art Begotti has suggested this link looks likely to be working if you’re wanting a live stream:

So the Star is Giovanni Whatshisface, who’s apparently an Italian pop star and beat Raab in that big Car Football thing that I can’t remember the name of.
Auto-Ball or something?
Something like that yeah. Did that happen this summer? I totally missed it if it did. I know things might’ve gotten pushed around due to Germany hosting Eurovision.
The candidate is Dr. Jo(h)n, a military dentist who enjoys jogging, skydiving, and long walks on elephants.
Spiel 1: Sahne Schlagen – Beating Cream. It’s a butter-making competition!
At least, I hope that’s what it is. It may very well be a wank race.
Golly, I can’t wait to see what happens after this commercial break.
Okay, it’s butter.
First to whip their cream enough so that they can invert their beaker without it coming out seems to be the winner here.
This is really not the time for the dramatic think music, but whatever.
And Giovanni wins! 1-0 him.
Spiel 2: Filmmusik. Guessing what movies songs come from, likely.
First to five wins.
It seems this is the sort of thing you either definitely know really quickly or definitely don’t. They’re quite quick to buzz in on famous melodies like James Bond and Mission Impossible, but less likely to buzz in (or buzz incorrectly) on things like The Da Vinci Code, Love Story, and… Avatar? Superman? E.T.? Hm.
Star Wars seems to be the popular wrong answer.
John wins 5-3 with The Jungle Book. Tricky!
Score is now 2-1 John.
Spiel 3: Medizinballe – Medicine ball. If it’s like the one I remember them doing on SdR, it’s the two players trying to pass all of the medicine balls to their opponent’s side through a hole in a wall high above the ground.
But first, another commercial break!
Lots of reminders that Schlag den Raab is back on the 17th with a jackpot of 1.5 million euros.
I’m here for another dose of German gameshow brilliance..
Yes the last time Mediziballe was played, I think it was played over three minutes, and they had to lob the balls over 6 ft over the other side of the wall and into the opponents section. End of the 3 mins, the one with the highest number of balls in their sections lost.
Thing is, those where so heavy, both Raab and the player were totally spent, so they had to go to one of the longest commercial breaks (even for this show) I can remember.
Should be fun…
Halfway in, and Giovanni seems to be winning by a 4-6 or 3-7 ish. It looks like not only is John missing the opening, but he’s also waiting for Giovanni’s balls to roll down the ramp, rather than attacking the pile tucked into the corner of his space.
And Giovanni wins 2-8.
Score is now 2-4 Giovanni, and his cheering section starts into *that cheer* again.
Spiel 4: Quiz. Generic enough. But which quiz will it be?
Aha, it’s the “five rotating categories, first to get three in a category wins the category, first to three categories owned wins” sort of quiz.
The categories are Politik, Geografie, Sport, Kirsten Dunst (abbreviated here as Kunst), and Wissenschaft.
Kunst is German for art, isn’t it?
Yes, it was a terrible joke.
I did wonder!
I would’ve done something funny for Wissenschaft (considering it isn’t obviously the English “science”), but I couldn’t come up with anything.
Giovanni’s incorrect answer gives John the Politik category. In general, Giovanni seems to be avoiding the buzzer so far this game, most of his points have come from John getting questions wrong.
Giovanni blows Wissenschaft, giving John another category. John’s ready to win on
Oh, well, there it is, John wins Geografie, giving him the win. It’s 6-4 John. It’s a real back and forth game!
Spiel 5: Tennis. I have a feeling the joker is going to be played here…
Apparently not! It’s John and Giovanni in Tennis after the call-and-lose question and a commercial break.
By the way, I know absolutely nothing about tennis or its scoring, so if anyone else can help with the commentary here, it’d be greatly appreciated. All I know is that it’s something best of three.
They’re switching sides, so I guess John severely won the first… point? Match? Anyway, it was 7-0 John.
Giovanni seems to be very loud about the two points he’s scored so far this round. It’s now four all, and Giovanni’s fans are singing *that song* again.
7-7 so far this point, it’s going into EXTRA INNINGS. Oh.
John finally takes the set 10-8, and wins 2 sets to nil. Giovanni throws his racquet at the net. Then they hug.
So it’s now… 11-4, John.
Spiel 6, the joker is played for Obst und Gemust: Fruit and Veg.
They each appear to have their own table with fruits and vegetables, and it looks like there’s some sort of scale between them. Probably trying to get the closest to a certain weight using a combination of items?
Heh! And they’ve even got the grocery store plastic bags to put them in.
First task is 2kg of potatoes. First to four points wins.
Giovanni’s very close with 1.996.
Stefan way low-balls it with 1.246.
First point to Giovanni.
Next up is 200g of arugula.
Stefan: 172g
Giovanni: 304g
1-1.
Next: 750g of carrots.
Giovanni: 912g
Stefan: 858g
2-1, Stefan.
Next: 500g of cherries.
My video seized up during this reveal, but I think it was something like 640-690 in favor of Stefan, it’s 3-1 now.
Next: 1.5kg of bananas.
Interesting how Giovanni is using his previous bags to try to compare his future weights. I think that’s actually hurting him.
Giovanni: 1.816kg
Stefan: 1.528kg
Stefan wins it for Dr. John, 4-1.
Score is now 17-4 for John, and it’s Matchball!
Game 7: Tretauto, pedal cars. I think I remember Stefan creaming someone at this game last time it was played. But first, a commercial break. I can’t remember, are there musical guests on Schlag den Star? Because they’re probably next after the break as well, since they haven’t been on yet.
Best of five motos.
Wow, Giovanni wins the first moto, but apparently only because John didn’t realize one of the handbrakes was on!
The kart-mounted close-up shot of them as they’re racing is hilarious, by the way.
That’s two motos to Giovanni, he might stay alive after all.
John looks like he’s going to finally take Giovanni on the third moto, but he still can’t get there fast enough.
It’s now 17-11, but still Matchball for John.
Spiel 8: Axtwerfen, axe throwing. This game could go either way, as I see it.
High score after three throws each, I think?
4-3 after the first throws.
Sorry, Giovanni had the 4.
They both score 2 in the second throw, so it’s now 6-5, Giovanni.
Giovanni goes way high on his third throw! It’s only one point, so it’s 7-5, but John still has one throw left…
John gets a three or a four, more than enough to win! John is now fifty grand richer!
In terms of contender vs star wins, it’s now 8-2 to the contender. The jackpot has only been rolled over twice.
One Moment in Time didn’t have the clips montage. Is that normal for Star? I feel like it is, because I vaguely remember asking about it last time.
How did Paul Sinha do on his first episode of The Chase today?
Very well but that could mean nothing as it might not have been his first “recorded” appearance. He beat the first three contenders but couldn’t beat the fourth for £7,000. The solo player scored 20 but Paul got that with 30 seconds to spare and making only 2-3 mistakes.
Going back to the first recorded appearance. Anne Hegerty lost her very first recorded (but not shown first) appearance but it was simply a blip. Paul, being paul was cracking jokes including he claimed he was one of many black and asian folk to attend Bernard Manning’s funeral.
Paul had a major blip on the first player of the team, getting a few wrong, opening up 3 spaces between him and the player. Apart from that, he knows his stuff. Hopefully we will see more development of his character in future episodes.
And it was for £8,000, not £7,000 😀
Bradley made a comment right at the end about how it was Paul’s first chase, so it probably was (unless there was some very sneaky editing done).
