Board of Excitement 10th – 16th April 2011

By | April 10, 2011

Phew, what a scorcher etc.

  • The Bother Series of Poker 2011 Game 7 – It is fair to say if you join tonight you probably won’t be able to win the league, but if you fancy a game don’t let that stop you. The results page can be found here. (8pm, Sunday, Full Tilt) Edit: I’ve had the wrong tourney number up all week, I am very sorry. The correct one to search for is #230456879 – there is ten minutes late registration.
  • The Cube – Philip Schofield challenges people to do the entirety of Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes inside the eponymous cube for £250,000. (7pm, Sunday, ITV1) Cube Series 3 Show Discussion Post
  • And then there’s nothing all week until…
  • Sing If You Can – never before has a show felt like the next Celebrity Wrestling before it’s even aired. Can it prove all its doubters wrong? (7:20pm, Saturday, ITV1) It helps the cause that it’s leading into…
  • Britain’s Got Talent – with a Cowell-less judging panel of Michael McIntyre, irony’s David Hasslehoff and Amanda Holden, although Cowell is meant to be back for the live shows in theory. (8:20pm, Saturday, ITV1)
  • The Bother Series of Poker Game 8 – just a heads up that the next game after tonight’s is NEXT Sunday. It’s a Deepstack Doubler, then it’s three weeks until the next one. Happy Easter!

Mastermind final on Friday. It will be a shock if Ian Bayley doesn’t win, despite a close call in the semi-final. Less excitingly, Friday is also champions day for Cookery School and Mock The Yokels.

So would you think it was a shock when he lost to Nancy Dickmann two years ago?

Yup, that was a biggie. To lose to an American… surprised he didn’t commit seppuku with the shame of it.

Hmm. Not sure I agree: Dr Bayley has seemed a little hesitant in his earlier matches, but then neither was he that obvious a winner in the 2008 heat. We know that he won’t have stage fright, but then neither will Diane Hallagen or Julia Hobbs. David Clark has tipped Paul Steeples for the win, and if the general knowledge questions fall for Peter Reilly or Tim Fenn, either could pull a surprise.

You’re collectively going to push for a tip here. As non-editable comments on someone else’s site are my witness, I’m reckoning Julia Hobbs to pull a slight surprise.

General thing: is it possible to search comments on Bothers Bar?

Duh, I didn’t think of going stright to Google, I was using the search box on the site. It’s alright, I’ve found what I was looking for.

The search box on the right seems to only hunt for posts, not comments, and at that, it might even only be post titles. I’ve not fiddled with it enough to know for sure, but I know I’ve had issues looking up comments with the search box before.

Something tells me that Barrier is The Cube’s ‘signature game’. As is (although to not as much an extent) Cylinder.

Also, ooh, nice countdown timer on the floor during Stack.

I’d quite like to see an on screen countdown clock too that would slow down/speed up with the action on screen – but calculating that would be a logistical nightmare!

…Not neccessarially… If you timestamped every frame coming from every camera as it was being created, either in a seperate frame or where you were going to put the timer…

I mean, that’s a lot of work, yes, and probably an amount prohibitive to doing (unless I’m wrong and they manually put the clock frames of programs onto the screen, in which case its an identical amount of work, I think) but I wouldn’t describe it as a logistical nightmare. More ‘mind numbingly tedius’.

In Portugal they had an onscreen clock at all the times they required one. They didn’t use slow-mo during them, I don’t think.

I’m looking forward to Sing if You Can. I’ve heard good things 😀

You’ve been very positive about this throughout everything. Are you actually associated with the show at all? It pays to be honest.

I saw an advert for this during The Cube and I didn’t think it looked too awful actually, but my gut still says it’s going to be rubbish.

No I’m not involved with the show. I know someone working on it but that means nothing to me. I have seen the French version and thought it was very good and expect the UK version to be similar.

I linked to the Philippines version a while ago, I didn’t think it was rubbish (although I certainly didn’t feel the need to watch each challenge twice) but there’s something about ITV big production formats that tries to be appealing, but in doing so tend to make it very unappealing. If that makes sense.

Ta, I saw Richard Osman mention it on his Twitter this morning, I’ll have a listen when I’ve got some time.

Bit sad to hear John Lloyd so down about telly, but I do think he’s right – unless there’s a cultural shift shortly, the creatives will find other, better ways to get their ideas to the public directly.

Mmm, lots of wry chuckling although I can’t say I’ve learnt all that much.

The Diceman has already been done before on the cheap anyway, on one of the Discovery channels I think? Maybe the Travel channel.

Yes, it was a travel series – it lasted quite a few seasons if memory serves.

Mmm, I watched it on occasion several years ago, but I can’t for the life of me remember where. Home and Leisure I think.

Four. The final one was in the US (because that’s where the first roll took the and it never took them out until they’d pretty much got enough material for the season, hence that year being called Diceman USA rather The Diceman) I think it was Discovery Travel but got reruns on Discovery. Very catchy theme tune. Rather jolly tone overall.

According to its website, iirc, they’d like to do a fifth if anyone wants to commission one.
