Board of Excitement 7th – 13th November 2010

By | November 7, 2010

Don’t tell anyone, but I’m just going to copy and paste last weeks:

  • The Cube (7pm, Sunday, ITV1)
  • The X Factor (8pm, Sunday, ITV1)
  • Only Connect – second quarter-final, The Wrights vs The Bloggers (8pm, Monday, BBC4)
  • The Apprentice (9pm, Wednesday, BBC1)
  • The Challenge: Cutthroat I caught up with this this week, the elimination challenge from the week before last involved hitting your opponent in the face with a fly swatter. Meanwhile one contestant is in hospital having fell badly into some water from 40ft in the air. WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN? (Wednesday, MTV US)
  • The Million Pound Drop – Live – eighty minutes each. I do not think it unfair to suggest that the weekend episodes on this week were significantly down on what the show was getting when it was being stripped, although they remain Decent For Channel Four. (10pm Friday and Saturday, C4)
  • Schlag den Star – hopefully someone will pop up with a link to watch a live stream nearer the time. (7:15pm, Friday, Pro Sieben/the internet)

Edited to add:

  • Premier League Poker – first match. Goodness knows why they show it almost a year after filming it, although I think I’ve forgotten who wins so that’s OK then. New eight-seated deepstack format as well. I believe the first few episodes may already be up on YouTube. (1am, Monday night, Channel 4) Edited to add: Er, might actually have started a few weeks ago, but the blurb says it’s the first match starting this evening. Oh, have there been qualifying episodes? That might explain a lot.

Well, a fourth contestant leaves with nothing on The Cube. Christian loses £20,000 playing Pin Point.

As of the end of the show, #thecube was the number 2 trending topic in the UK on Twitter, with “Schofield” number 9.

A string of American teenagers tweeting about cheesy pop music kept #thecube off the top 10 worldwide, though.

This week’s UC: Oxford Brookes v University of the Arts London.

It’s been nearly four months since Brookes’ rather Lazarus-like comeback against Cardiff, coming from nearly a hundred points behind to force a 210-210 tie, before getting the third breaking starter.

On the other hand, it’s been a mere month and a half since new boys UAL trumped Imperial, 215-95, in a match best remembered for a noticeable cross-over of arts and science questions.

That huge comeback will have either buoyed Brookes – who have Ian Bayley as their coach – or taken quite a lot out of them. They’ll certainly have to watch out for UAL captain Adam Walker, who was hot property on the buzzers against Imperial.

In any case, I expect them to make it five times that a 1992 university has reached the last eight – after Glamorgan in 1996/7, Sheffield Hallam in 2000/1, London Metropolitan in 2003/4 and Hertfordshire in 2005/6.

Also, I hope this match isn’t quite as disappointing as last week’s…

I don’t know why they are scheduling the latest series on PLP on at 1am? Daft, if you ask me.

An early heads up for NEXT week’s Only Connect, the first of four specials:

    Monday 15 November
    8:30pm – 9:00pm
    BBC4
A Children in Need special, which sees the Wheel Men (Rev Richard Coles, Adam Hart-Davis and Grub Smith) taking on the combined brains of the Larks (Michael Bywater, Andrew Motion and Stuart Maconie). Presented by Victoria Coren.

I might be wrong but didn’t you say the show was thinking about a celebrity special but it was shelved as it was too much work with celebrity bookers etc…

That was series 3 (and even in series 2 it was vaguely mooted). But two celeb specials (of which CIN is one), the previously-trailed UC/OC special and a 3rd place-off were commissioned as part of the series 4 run.

A bit of controversy on TAR this week- the team that finished last in the previous leg, which was a NEL, didn’t have to do a Speed Bump, but no reason was given on-air as to why. Rumors suggest that there was a judging error on one of the tasks the episode before that involved the last-place team, and the producers decided that because of that, they’d drop the Speed Bump for this leg to give back at least some of the time that was lost.

Also, RTFC Syndrome came into full force this week.

Fox have picked up MPD for a 12-episode run, apparently, after either a) enjoying the pilot or b) enjoying its moderately decent performance on C4.

    @David….

It has now been confirmed on Twitter that the last leg was not a non elimination leg. Due to an error with the sheet music Nick and Vicki lost a lot of time as one of the first few guesses made by them was correct.

To make up for this they were saved at the pit stop told to return to the mat and were told it was a non elimination leg.

No Speed Bump task was required or i would imagine had been organised.
