Hot repeating quiz action

If you missed it first time round, it’s well worth catching this time: the grand final of series one of Only Connect – the Crossworders vs the Psychologists is on BBC Four this evening at 7:30pm, and presumably on iPlayer for the next week.

The final chase on The Chase bugs me ever so slightly. It’s both biased against and biased in favour of the team, and I can’t help feeling that it would be a more satisfyingly symmetrical challenge if both some of the biases against and some of the biases in favour of the team could be removed. (And simpler, too, but that’s not really relevant.)

The biggest bias against the team is that the players have to buzz in, which just takes up time, and the Chaser doesn’t have that problem. If the contestants could just shout their answers out whenever, that would be easily adequate (and much fairer) compensation in return for either (a) the n-step bonus at the start of the game or (b) the ability to send the Chaser back a step upon the team correctly answering a Chaser-missed quesiton.

Given the number of teams that have beaten The Chaser. Nobody on their own has yet beaten them, though it was close earlier this week.

Also we learned why they have buzzers the other week. The wrong person was shouting out the answers which could result to the wrong answer being given.

CMD – I hear you bro..
I find the buzz element fiddly, and over the minutes it probably wastes 2 extra questions being asked.

The biggest unfair element of the show (which I’ve mentioned on here before) though, is if the chaser gets the first question wrong, the team get to answer, but no penalty for the chaser is applied.
Totally unfair. I suggest if the team answer the question correctly, either knock 5 seconds off the remaining time, or if the chaser gets another question wrong (or passes) they automatically get knocked back one step.

Or just move the team an extra step away. It’s the same as moving the Chaser to -1, if you think about it. In fact, I’d rather see this used for the entire round, just for aesthetic’s sake.
