Pointless guest hosts start today

By | September 20, 2022

As we know, Richard Osman has stepped down from being the richardosman on Pointless (although he’s still doing the celebrity shows) and is being replaced by a series of guest hosts doing, I believe, three week stints. Sally Lindsay is the first one, Alex Brooker, Lauren Laverne, Stephen Mangan, Konnie Huq and Ed Gamble are also being lined up in what must surely be a future Pointless question in 2032.

It will be interesting to see if this provides a fillip to the numbers, but also interesting to see how it affects the BBCs repeat policy on this show in future – it should be much harder to hide the repeats now.

Edit: Wow, thanks to @danielmarkhurst on Twitter for the head’s up, Kevin Duala off of Challenge TV and Blue’s Clues (and to be fair the recent Bidding Wars on Channel 4) is hosting the final four eps of this series of Moneybags Thursday through to a double bill on Saturday (3:25pm onwards). I wonder why Craig was only available for the first ep?

Edit Edit: This has somehow completely passed me by, the new series of The Tournament begins today at 4:30pm on BBC1. The first series was awkward and a bit dull, it sounds like the new series won’t be quite so awkward at least. We discussed the first series here.

He did miss a couple of episodes of The Gadget Show too they said he was self isolating. So I am guessing Moneybags was filmed around the same time think it was around February.

Assuming they film 3 a day, does this mean Kevin was on standby the whole time? Do all shows have standby hosts?

This is a really interesting question.

There’s a show on Amazon, Backstage with Katherine Ryan, where she’s taken away in the penultimate episode literally as the show is recording thanks to a positive test and Geoff Norcott, who was writing on it, has to fill-in for the audience that’s there and the other performers weren’t even told until after the recording that’s why it suddenly happened. Also explains why the final episode is effectively a clip show rather than a “proper” episode, presumably.

Both Countdown and Dancing on Ice have been caught out this year by not having them, hence why Les only filmed three episodes on his first day of filming Countdown (as evidenced by Daniel Brocklebank only filming three episodes). Dancing on Ice really annoyed me by not bringing either Ashley or Oti ‘out front’ when Phil and Holly went down, as they obviously had no problem with having a fluctuating number of judges as they had Arlene Phillips as a fifth judge earlier in the series.

Just wondering if these are the only 6 guest presenters this series of Pointless?

Probably for now – that’d be 90 episodes worth, they normally do two recording sessions a year I think, so we’ll probably hear more in due course.
