And rather brilliantly, Pete Waterman’s hit back over Dr Fox’s claims that the song is a bit average.
“He doesn’t know anything, he’s not even a REAL fox,” is a quote I have just made up (actually I made it up years ago but that’s by the by), although by calling That Sounds Good To Me “average” that is vastly overstating the quality of the song reperesenting the UK this evening.
“It’s become waylaid by people trying to be serious artists. Hang on a minute, we’re here to party! This isn’t showbusiness, it’s a song contest.”
That is true! And it just so happens several other countries have written songs you’d much rather hear at a party.
I’m pulling for Germany this evening, because I stand to win £40 in the work sweepstake if Lena’s Satellite wins, which as it’s a brilliant slice of Ellis-Bextor-esque pop it just might, provided POLITICAL VOTING doesn’t rear it’s ugly head. Although she does have quite an odd way of pronouncing words.
If you’re watching at home, feel free to come along to the Bar and offer your marks out of ten, and then we can see how in step the Bother’s Bar jury is with the Eurovision. You may be able to watch outside of Europe on http://www.eurovision.tv/esctv/future. I look forward to reading the comments in the morning.
If Germany do win tonight then Stefan Raab will get the praise as he decided to partially set up the competition show earlier this year to find the next Eurovision entry.
Or Stefan “AMAZING” Raab, as he’s known on his birth certificate.
I really hope Turkey wins… There’s just something awesome about their song.
So do I, I’ve had a little flutter on them, think they’ve got a good chance.
Might have said this before here, but oneurope_live got very excited about them when they were at 50s and I put the word around some of the gamblier types at work. I have co-workers holding Turkey papers e/w at 22s, 28s and 33s. It’s now generally available at 9s to win and 7/4 to make the top four. Fingers firmly crossed…
Hope you had ’em each way!
Really hoping Waterman gets nil point too teach him a lesson – but fear even though the juries are supposed to favour the actual good songs, that might save him from that humiliation.
and yes, the feed is working in the US, at least for now…
Watching the Scottometer update in real time is addictive… more fun than even watching the subtitles!
Azerbaijan then. Seems to be a bit lacking in vocal quality from last time.
5.5/10
I’m not in the mood for Euorvision tonight, so I’ll give the final a miss. Enjoy it, guys. Someone else needs to do the spreadsheet if your having one, though.
Pretty bloody uninspiring songs so far.
One further thought – the arrangement of Josh Dubovie’s song tonight was significantly better than during Your Country Needs You – and given the pretty poor standard of the other fare, it seemed half-decent.
I agree, better than I expected, but of course there are FAR better songs putting it politely.
Holy crap – that Armenian bird has massive jugs and I saw her camel toe :D!
Here’s how I scored them:
Azerbaijan: 8
Spain: 6
Norway: 5
Moldova: 6
Cyprus: 7
Bosnia/ Herzegovina: 7
Belgium: 7
Serbia: 4
Belarus: 5
Ireland: 9
Greece: 8
Georgia: 8
Turkey: 9
Albania: 7
Iceland: 8
Ukraine: 1(!)
France: 6
Romania: 7
Russia: 3
Armenia: 8
Germany: 7
Portugal: 8
Israel: 7
Denmark: 8
So, hopefully Turkey and Ireland will do well in my view.
Apparently Spain’s performance had a stage invasion first time around, so we have the ‘pleasure’ of hearing it again!
I’ll be back to comment on the result later on.
People win on Million Pound Drop £75k!
Just spotted, is Raab sitting with Germany?
Yes he is!
Million Pound Drop overruns to make sure the final contestants get the chance to finish their game.
All hail Stefan Raab for pulling the Germans from death to total victory.
UK end Eurovision on 10 points and dead last. Total disaster, but undeserved – given the last time that happened, Jemini were singing their off-key rubbish.
Given that the winner was a song well-known in Germany and across the continent already and second-placed maNga are apparently quite big regionally, I reckon this calls for Robbie Williams next year. Of course he’s not going to be up for it, but…
Nah, Amy Macdonald. Bigger in Europe than here, and if Belgium can do so well with their simple song, Macdonald (who does the same thing better) definitely could.
I’d bet Simon Cowell couldn’t stop laughing with the results tonight, unless he was watching Million Pound Drop Overtime.
To put it into perspective. Germany was third from bottom last year.
Why doesn’t the BBC just get a famous singer well known in Europe to represent us… Morrisey offered to do it but BBC declined! Someone like Robbie Williams, Take That, Leona Lewis or Oasis. Okay, I know it would take some convincing, but I’m sure someone who’s slightly well known would want to do it. Even Katie Melua offered to do it but once again BBC rejected. Stupid fools!
The German winner was basically a rip-off of Lily Allen. Even if we got Lily Allen to sing one of her songs, we would’ve done well.
FGS. It pisses me off so much that the BBC put in little effort in most years. The one year they tried (last year) we did well. But they’ve undone all that good work.
The selection show was probably the worst thing I’ve seen on TV this year. It was horrid. I am so annoyed. By the way, what the heck has happened to the Eurovision Dance Contest?
it was axed, mainly for being \ really rubbish concept.
I should do it. I got an A in Music GCSE. I could get at least 30 points.
Yay! My favorite got second, my second favorite got first, and my third favorite got third. ^_^ Life is awesome right now.
Congratulations to Brig who’s now 40 quid up…
Any chance of a new compo with your winnings, Brig?
When The Bother SOP is finished, there will be a new competition before Fantasy X Factor starts.
Last night
The Weakest Link: 2.5m (14.0%)
Eurovision Song Contest 2010: 5.5m (24%)
The Whole 19 Yards: 4.5m (21.5%)
Britain’s Got Talent: 9.3m (38.6%)
The Million Pound Drop Live: 2.2m (9%)
Poor for The Weakest Link for which Total Wipeout did miles better than Anne-Bot. 19 Yards bounces back from last week’s series low to a series high. Prime Mininster Simon Cowell continues to run the country’s television. Ratings Bear is disappointed with Eurovision and produced the lowest rating EVER! GRRR! Ratings Bear will be hunting down Waterman soon as he still lives in the year 1984 and question whether he had in a coma and came back. Also he is a total coward for not supporting it. Full praise goes to nearly-jobless Davina. Her and The One Million Pounds Drop produced an excellent rating and defied all predictions to place the show in third place on the night. If it wasn’t for Subo: The Runners Up Story, the show would’ve been in second place.
That’s a horrendous performance for Eurovision – which got 7.8m last year and crucially, was up against Britain’s Got Talent just the same. Are we going to see things just dwindle away until the Beeb finally decide enough’s enough and pull out?
I doubt it – the relative cost to us is about the same as an episode of Doctor Who, doesn’t everyone keep saying? I that case, I imagine it can dwindle a bit further yet.
There wasn’t much of a buzz around it this year was there?
Well, probably in terms of productions costs to the BBC – it roughly would be the same as an episode of Dr Who – but the BBC do shovel a fair wod of notes each year (along with ARD/Das Erste, France Televisions and RTVE) to fund the good work of the EBU – Hence our express lane into the final, no matter what ballcocks we send.
Nice to see the sound mixers sorted out Lena’s voice on the night. When she did the same song on Schag Den Raab earlier this month, it was pretty awful. Didn’t think it stood a chance. That said, all the pre-contest chatter was that it was a shoo-in for Azerbaijan and it’ll be to Baku next year – so nice to see an attempt to suggest the winner and go with this to help our friends from the east of the continent who to vote for, failed wonderfully.
Tell you what – what price on the Raabman to be one of the hosts next year? Speaks German and fluent English, all ARD need to do is to get some female who can burble French and – ding – instant hosts.
Or would his close association with ProSeiben throw a spanner in the works? Or don’t the Germans get worked up about cross-channel presenting like the battles between BBC and ITV over here.
It depends whether Stefan is golden handcuffed to Pro7. If he cannot do it then I can see two potential contenders. Thomas Gottschalk who can clearly speak English since he interviews all the English speaking guests on Wetten Dass but he is too old to host something like this? The other contender would be Matthias Opdenhövel who hosted Unser Star für Oslo, which the viewers chose singer AND song. We all know him a the host of Schlag den Raab, I’m sure he can speak English as well.
As for the female host, it’s got to be Heidi Klum.
Or Tania from Sky Sport Germany, who keeps elbowing Martin Brundle out of the way during his pre-race F1 grid walk. Now, she can speak English…
Hey, there’s a new cross-polination format ‘ Rabb Schalgs Den Eurovision’. Stefan Rabb takes on a different person over one game from 25 counties in Eurovision over three nights…
The BBC got exactly what they deserved with Eurovision – and the fault lies with whoever thought Pete Waterman still had it because I think we all got exactly what we expected from the eighties pop machine. Even more frustrating it came after a significant improvement last year when the BBC decided to treat the show with some respect and got rewarded for it.
The solution isn’t difficult -winning may need a bit of luck and seemingly a promotional tour now, but to do well (and I think doing well and not winning is most broadcasters preference!) it’s as simple as a good song matched with a good singer. That’s it!
And brilliant for the Million Pound Drop – best mew gameshow this year at least, and nearly the cheapest too! Perfect result though with a £75k win – showed it is possible, but a small enough win to mean we’re still anticipating the shows first really big winners. I guess too they must have a spare £1m close by to top up the case too!
Does anyone know if the songs are available in iTunes, or are they geoblocked? Or is there some other place to download them?
The double album of all the songs is certainly avaliable on UK iTunes, doubtless it is “avaliable” elsewhere if you look hard enough.
